Summary: Frighteningly intelligent!
Review: Gerrold has a split personality as far as his writing is concerned. That a series of this brilliance could be written by the same author of _A Covenant of Justice_ makes one scratch his head in belwilderment. Is it possible that there are two Gerrolds?? The author's preface indicates that Covenant was originally a TV script. If so, _CoJ_ is a strong argument for the summary execution of every TV executive in the country. The War against the Chtorr series, though, is sublime.... action, social analysis, military strategy, human relationships, philosophy (delivered a la Heinlein), humor, and the familiar weirdness of the future are addressed in this and the remaining books of the series. One of the few series that I have read that gets _better_ with every book. After reading _Rage for Revenge_, going back to _Matter_ reveals that this excellent book is just a journeymans progress on his way to becoming a master

Summary: So good I can't stand it.
Review: I can only reiterate the brilliant reviews this book and series has already recieved. If you like literature--read this book! If you like Heinlein or Frank Herbert--read this book now! The only problem is the series is not finished! Where is book #5? I have been waiting for years and have begun to give up hope. Please finish and publish this book. Please... please... please...

Summary: One of the best
Review: I don't know what hooked me into this story. Actually I got it as a sci-fi book of the month club book (mostly because I liked the cover art). None the less it's been years and I'm still waiting for the next. This series is addictive and fun, I can't help but recommend it to others (one successful convert so far). The truth be told though, I don't even read sci-fi anymore, but I guarantee you I'll pick up the next book in this series no matter when it comes out. I really can't recommend it highly enough. If you like horror/sci-fi/or just a good story this series is for you. It's great escapist entertainment and I know you'll thank me and all of the others who've given it a 5 star rating.

Summary: Absolutely amazing book, series, idea, ...LOVED IT!!!
Review: I don't want to say anything about the plot because it would only serve to make it less enjoyable to those of you who read it. Suffice to say it's one of the most well written books I've ever read (and that includes the classics). It just gets better and better (and that goes for the other three written books in the series). Don't think you know what's going to happen because you don't! My only hope is that someday he finishes the series (apparantly there are three books left unwritten... I'd give anything for just one of them!).

Summary: This is my favorite book, bar none
Review: I read a lot, and so don't have a lot of time to repeat books (too much new to read!) However, I've read this one at least a dozen times, and it is always just as good.

I force this book (and the others in the series...FINISH THE NEXT ONE, DAVID!) on all my friends at some point in their lives. Almost all of them have agreed with me about how good it is. I have four or five copies of these books around, just to be sure I never lose them when loaning them out.

One thing I will have to sheepishly admit is that I read this book long before I touched any Heinlein...and when I picked up my first Heinlein novel, Starship Troopers, I was floored to realize that Gerrold's style is very similar, and, well, Solomon Short has been around for a long time. Doesn't make it any less great, and it suddenly makes the dedication to Robert and Ginny Heinlein make a *lot* of sense!

The characters are complex, the hero isn't perfect, the science is very strong, the plot is interesting (it's a page-turner in several spots), and the overall sense of story from the four books together makes for some interesting speculations. I am sure David knows where it's all heading, but I hope he hurries up and lets the rest of us in on it...I waited years for the fourth book, and it was worth it. I'm sure that the wait for the fifth will be as worth it, but dang it, I'm getting impatient!

Summary: The 2nd most awaited series I've read
Review: I really enjoyed this book, as well as the rest of the series. I say 2nd most anticipated, because I'm a big David Brin fan, and would like to see the Uplift series finished. I read this on the recommendation of my sister. I have now passed the series on to two other readers who both loved it as well. The military action is well described-I was a medic in the Army for 5yrs.-and ACCURATE! I also really enjoyed the political development that Gerrold used. My only quibble is that he is too much like Heinlein. If you're interested, read Starship Troopers, and notice the similarities between the high-school educations, and the teachers.

Summary: Chtorr series
Review: I really enjoyed this story. Gerrold starts the story off with action to get you hooked, and keeps you hooked all of the way through. This is the first book in a great series. I suggest not only this book, but the whole series.

Summary: After 55 years of SF, this is top rung.
Review: I saw these books on the bookstand, but the BEMs on the cover put me off (Bug-eyed monsters to you uninitiates.) A trusted friend told me these books were the best SF ever and I scoffed. Then "Hmmm," I said. Now, I've read them all twice and am waiting dry-tongued and itching-eyed for the next... and I've never waited so long with no let-up in my addictive book craving. Mr. Gerrold knows more about just about everything that I know about than I ever will and he stuffs it in his series and makes me gobble it up with the hair on my neck standing straight up. The next of the series was promised by the publisher for 1990, sort of hinting it was the final volume. David, take a lesson from Robert Jordon who's only 80% the writer you are. Don't wrap it up. I'm a typical guy, judging from the other reviews, and I'll read 5 or 6 more in this series if you'll provide them and keep up the quality. These books are a psychological, sociological, ecological education by way of twisted gut reactions and bleary-eyed mornings from reading all night. Come on, DG, stop acting rich and get to it.
