And that's because I remember my first encounter with it. This is pure poetry and I would think that the evocative powers of Roger Zelazny are only matched by Tolkien. Now Amber's universe is part of my emotive background and I wish I was still new to it to discover it anew over and over again. YOU DON'T KNOW YOUR LUCK!
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: You can't read just one! Review: Zelazny's books are the greatest! You simply can't dislike his writing style. Corwin is everything you could want in a protagonist. The first five books are awesome, and even the last five aren't as well-liked by diehard Zelazny fans, I love them just as much. You will NOT regret getting this book, but you might regret not buying all of them at once and having to wait to see what happens next when you finish the first book : )

Review: This book has set the standard of what a good fantasy story should look like. I keeps you going, revealing enough to be intriguing but leaving enough to the imagination for you to ravel in.
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: The amazing story of Corwin in the world of Amber Review: I think I've read the first five Amber novels over 5 times now. They are truly at the pinnacle of fantasy writing. Roger Zelazny's colorful reality comes to life for the reader, making the reader wish he or she was a prince or princess of Amber! I've lent these books to friends on many occasions with glowing responses. The highest recommendation!

Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: Fantastic, mature fantasy. A classic. Review: One of my favorites in the fantasy genre. I think the first five books at least must be considered a modern fantasy classic by most standards. They are all intelligently written and conceived, and splendidly executed. Zelazny has a knack for regulating the tempo of his narrative and keeping your interest. At times he will summarize an event or a place in just a few words or sentences that are nonetheless packed with meaning; at other times, he will indulge in a stream-of-consciousness style of prose (e.g., during the aptly named `hell-rides'); yet other times, he describes the world in rich detail. (Notable in this last respect are the descriptions of the battle sequences, the work of a true technician.) But he never slips into sterile prose, although some of it is overly mannered.
The story weaves together a continuum of many worlds, or "shadows" as they are called, of which ours is only one, anchored at either end by the "true" worlds: Corwin's world is Amber, the city-realm of Order with its great Pattern which both holds together the universe and endows the princes of Amber with the ability to walk into Shadow; at the other end lie the Courts of Chaos, ever struggling with the Amberites for control over the fate of Shadow, and the universe itself.
But though Amber is the representative of Order, the princes are ever in strife, each jockeying for power and plotting the ruin of his fellows. There is plenty of intrigue, conniving and plot twists, and despite the epic premise, Zelazny's style of narrative here, first-person and deeply psychological, keeps a tight focus on the characters which is uncharacteristic of the genre in its maturity. Make no mistake: there is little character development outside of Corwin himself---and even he remains largely unchanged---, but remember that this is a universe which is formed and molded by the machinations of these characters, and to give them interesting personalities and relationships is a neat trick which Zelazny seems to pull of with ease.
This series is wonderful, and holds much more than your average escapist fantasy, especially if you can read between the lines, but for all that it doesn't sacrifice any of the action or romance in the process. The first five books, which form a complete story, are highly recommended. The second five, concerning Corwin's offspring Merle, were for me not so inspired or original, but I confess that I couldn't read them all in one go because of the gaps between publishings, and I wasn't able to follow the plot so closely as a result.
