Rating: Summary: It was good...but not great Review: If you're planning to buy this book, I would say "just buy it." When you get it in the mail, and you begin to read, you will enjoy it! However (my opinion may be the way it is because I am a high school student) but some parts of the book are confusing. I do not recommend this for young audiences nor the frail at heart.
Rating: Summary: Wonderful Review: This book was very realistic about how it displayed some of the actual events that took place during the holocaust. It is a very detailed and exciting book and i'm sure any advanced, somewhat of a mystery book kind of reader would highley enjoy.RECOMENDED
Rating: Summary: All time favorite book! Review: I read this book back in seventh grade. I am now a freshman in college and i must say that to this day- it is my all time favorite book. The way that Jane Yolen is able to take the story of the holocaust and intertwine it with the fairy tale of briar rose is stunning! The book leaves you on the edge of your seat and the ending leaves you breathless! I highly reccomend this book to young and old alike! Happy reading!
Rating: Summary: my favorite book Review: I loved this book! It is now my favorite. I got This book at the Holocaust Museum in Washington, D.C. so obviously it delt with WWII. The way Jane Yolen mixed the nineties, WWII, and Sleeping Beauty was absolutely brillant. I can read this book over and over and not get tired of it. There is no other book I can say that about! I hope to read more of Jane Yolen. EVERYONE MUST READ THIS BOOK!
Rating: Summary: Holocaust tale given life Review: Jane Yolen's Briar Rose is a masterpiece of controlled prose. She allows her main charcter to meander as a sort of "offbeat" detective attempting to uncover the secret of her grandmother's early life. It is a holocaust story which illustrates that the gas chamber was neither the only, nor necessarily the most brutal, of the Nazi forms of execution, and it allows the reader to observe the festering process of silence becoming guilt then resentment. The story revisits Yolen's fascination with the fairy tale genre, and allows her to experiment with both allegory and metaphor. This is,however, not a book for academics. It is a powerful tale, easy to read and similarly easy to enjoy. I highly recommend this book to any who realise that the search for the past may reveal skeletons which do not dwell easily in cupboards.
Rating: Summary: Simply beautiful Review: I grew up LOVING Sleeping Beauty. I mean, I would watch the movie absolutely, non-stop. This novel is perfect for anyone who loved the story when they where younger, but written in a more mature and solemn tone. The characters are good, strong, and believable, the plot keeps the reader at the edge of their seats. Not because it's suspenseful, but you can't help but wonder what Becca's going to find out next. I read this book in 2½ hours-- and enjoyed every minute in it.
Rating: Summary: I love Holocaust stories and this is a must for all readers! Review: I loved this book. It was mysterious but at the same time you knew what was exactly going on. jane yolen is such a good writer, and probably one of my favorites!!
Rating: Summary: Great Book For Younger Audience Review: I think if you are expecting an excitingly romantic book, or something that has a lot of detail and suspense you will be very disappointed. I believe this story was written for an implied reader of about adolescence age. It is great for understanding the holocaust in simple terms and by using the Briar Rose fairy tale. Yolen has interwoven more than one fairy tale into this story; Cinderella fits into the story with the two sisters who Becca is constantly feeling inferior to and also a little red riding hood tale, where Becca discovers that her Gemma wasn't the princess but a holocaust survivor. For those who don't understand this story or who don't like it, I feel you need to look at it more critically or learn how to look at a book in a more critical way.
Rating: Summary: A Wonderful fairytale/holocaust/self-discovery book Review: In this novel, Jane Yolen cleverly intertwines her grandmothers life during the holocaust with the beloved fairytale Briar Rose (Sleeping Beauty). It was a wonderful book that I heavily enjoyed and I have yet to find another book quite like it.
Rating: Summary: This is the greatest book ever that should recieve 10 star. Review: This is an incredible book. Once you pick this book up you will never ever put it down. This story haunts you at night and keeps you thinking about this story. It is nicely weaved into the story of the Holocaust. It is so interesting. You have to right it. TRUST ME. YOU WILL LOVE IT.
