Rating: Summary: An Instant Classic - recommended. Review: The first chapter of the book will hook you up! You will want to read the rest more enthusiastically to find out what is going to happen once the war with the Zor has re-started. Since I only have time to read 3-to-4 books per month, I usually read well established authors and usually best sellers. Dark Wing is the first not-a-classic-yet book that I have read in a long time and I am not disappointed. I will not be surprised if this book becomes a classic in its genre. I could not put it down during the last 150 pages. You wanted to know what is going on with the energy bursts, etc., and all the political intrigue and spionage, etc. The author managed to write an entertaining story while exploring deeper issues regarding human nature... genocide, etc,. The author managed to write and intellectually appealing science fiction story that could be used in an ethics course. I have given 4 stars to books that are considered classics and best sellers already, but I believe that Dark Wing deserves 5 stars. If I could not put it down, what else can I give it? However, if you are looking for shallow starship dog fights and duels, this is not a book for you. Since my budget is limited, I have to wait for the softcover of the Dark Path. As soon as the softcover is out I'll buy it without thinking about it twice.

Rating: Summary: Good, I would almost recommend it to everyone Review: The plot is engaging and the action is second to none. The book also goes in directions that I would not have expected it to go providing it with a satisfactory conclusion which is more than I can say for most books of this ilk. First you have the humans-Old story the general population is weary of war and anxious for a peace that the military knows is never going to happen The Enemy-The Zor, now these guys seem themselves as holy warriors on some sort of religious crusade because they see humans as servants of their equivalent of Satan. They are the "ZURG" from Starcraft the "Kilrathi" from the Wigcommander series. No doubt noble in their own way but difficult for us as characters to get into. My problems with the book- Too much time is spent on the Zor mysticism aspect of this book, then we the reader realize it is two chapters later and nothing has been said. The human characters are interchangeable with the exception of one or two, all very prim and proper but not lifeless or unlovable don't get me wrong. I only read this book because a friend suggested to me that if I liked a similar series made by David Weber I would like this one. That set of books is good, this seems rather a poor imitation but not without its good points.

Rating: Summary: A truely exceptional first book Review: This is a finely crafted tale of intersteller war between the Zor and human kind. It is also window into a 24th century that may be, a detailed blending of the physics common to hard SF with less concrete "sensitives" and communal alien minds. The author achieves the difficult task of presenting a truely alien intelligence and culture in a fashion that is easily read and very natural. Wonderfully descriptive, the reader is part of alien architectures. I could feel what it was like to walk along a narrow walkway thousands of feet in the air with no hand rails (since on their homeworld Zor can fly). While written long before the events of last September, this book raises some questions about the nature of war and the difficulties of total war and the operation of politics surrounding a war that I found timely in our current circumstances. Best of all the various aspects of the story and its characters work and it flows exceptionally well. I read the entire book in a single day. Its a terrifc "read", a tour de force from an author with more to come. Disclaimer: I have been priviledged to number Walter Hunt among my friends since 1984. He is a man of immense talent and imagination and I offer him my congratulations on one "heck" of a good book.
Rating: Summary: Intelligent space opera just in time for Christmas Review: This is a real treat for hard SF fans: an excellent, well imagined space opera that isn't afraid to tackle big issues like total war, how far to push self-defense before it turns into a massacre, whether genocide can ever be justified, and necessity for knowing one's enemy. It's also refreshing to read military SF that doesn't spend page after page after page explaining the hardware/political system at the expense of the characters and the story. A very, very good beginning, with plenty of hints about sequels. If the rest are even half this good, we're looking at the start of a major career.
Rating: Summary: A thrilling page-turner; I couldn't put it down. Review: Walter H. Hunt has created a remarkable -- and believable -- future for mankind. In the 24th century, humanity has FTL jump capability and is colonizing the planets beyond Sol as a united people. Then they meet the zor, a bloodthirsty race intent on wiping out humankind. From the first battle to the tense drama of the ending, I was enthralled. I read this book -- all 491 pages -- in two days. Hunt has created not only credible characters, a believable universe, and a fastmoving plot, he has also created an enemy race that is as mysterious as it is true-to-form. The zor -- their language, culture, and religion -- feel as real as any race described in Middle Earth. Well done. Now, when is the next book due? Disclaimer: I know Walter Hunt personally; however, my review above is by no means exaggerated because of that relationship. If anything, my expectations were higher. Walter has not let me down. This is an excellent novel.

Rating: Summary: Great read if you you like intersteller war but a nit Review: Well plotted, believable hardware, believable clashing cultures in every way but one: with completely sexually mixed crews and voyages lasting for months, there was not even a whisper of sex. They could have all been men for all the politically correct female captains brought to the story. This book could have been written in 1955. Yes, I liked it, but I'm more than a little old fashioned in my taste in science fiction, so you are warned.
