Summary: Great Book
Review: I read this book years ago, but It is still one of my favorites.

It is a great fantasy novel for someone with an analytical mind and a penchant for subtlety. A good book for imaginative intellectuals (as opposed to entertainment-seekers or cyincal intellectuals who like to find fault in everything not of the mundane).

Hardy is a good writer who has an excellent grasp of human nature and a natural bent for keeping complex theoritical constructs internally consistent. His story is imaginative and fantastic, and yet at the same time not an affront to one's "common sense". The story line moves along at a nice pace with a few nice twists and turns.

This whole series is well worth a read or two. I can't say enough good things about this book.

Summary: One of the most BEAUTIFUL stories ever!
Review: I thought this book was amazing, to say the least! It showed a very angry young person who wishes to fulfill his father's dream. He obiviusly felt that magic would be the best way to do it- not that I blame him, I would do and think the same- and tried his best at it. This book also shows a remarkable originality in the quality of the magic, making it seem work, not just play. I was flabbergasted by some of the charcters, like Aeriel, who lets honor and not her heart rule her life. This book showed an extra depth to the regular characters and I rate it as one of my favorite books to say the least. I also felt it very inspiring, showing what a person can do if thier heart is in it.
FINAL COMMENT: Five stars definite!

Summary: It's been years, but I can't forget it.
Review: I was loaned this book years ago by a friend who knew that I was studying real magic. I guess he thought I would find it interesting. Did I ever...

I remember what shocked me the most right off the bat was that this book explained the various 5 magics in exquisite detail (regardless of whether or not it followed actual magical laws). I found this alone to be endlessly fascinating.

The story itself is utterly fantastic and completely engrossing. Definitely a page turner. It resembles the mythological archtype of the hero. Sort of like a medieval Star Wars with a healthy dose of magic. The other reviewers have already detailed the story enough, so I won't elaborate further.

I agree with one reviewer, this should defintely be made into a movie by a major director/producer. I also think Lucas would be an excellent choice.

In rare moments, I remember this book, and inevitably,...I smile. I recommend it to fantasy readers, and magicians alike. Neither will be disappointed.

Summary: The More Flavorful fiver ...
Review: If you have ever been leant a book, there are times when it hirts to give it back. This is one of those books. Through several years of mind-numbing 'Master of the Five Magics' stands out as a young apprentice dabbles in five mystic arts in hopes of gaining fame and fortune and the saving of his world. What he finds is hardship, friendship, love and the experiance of a life time. No, he doesn't actually become a "Master" of the five magics, but this will beyour only disappointment in this story of good characters, humor and suspense. A quick read with with staying power! P.S. I only gave it a nine (9) because I don't belive in ten's (10) ..

Summary: Fantastic Story!
Review: It is my understanding that Mr. Hardy is no longer writing. What a shame. In his few books he gave the fantasy world a talent that few others have shown, and it's been around 20 years since I read this book.

His system of magic and magic use is one of the most logical and well-thought out I have ever read. It's rare that a fantasy novel actually shows how a wizard became a wizard. All the work and practice that goes into it.

Do yourself a favor and find a copy at a used book store or online. You will not regret it.

Summary: A truly great read
Review: Like some other reviewers, I can't remember exactly when I read this, but it seems like freshman year in high school. I just found my old copy of this book in storage, and I suddenly rememebred how incredible this book is. I remember following Alodar through his trials and his desperate search for some way to win a queen's hand. I remember how he went through each of the 5 magics in the hopes of finding something that could aid him in his quest for a woman, and how he in turn becomes involved in a much greater plan. l also rememeber how I threw this book across the room several times because I was so SICK of Alodar getting repeatedly shafted by others that benefited from his hard work. But, most of all, I remember how I actually yelled out with joy (in the middle of class no less) as I read the story's climax. It is that good, and well worth the wait. This book is flawless and fascinating. I can't wait to read it again.

Summary: Really Good
Review: My son who is 12 randomly picked up The Five Magics at a used bookstore. We read it aloud over a period of 4-5 months and marvelled at how good it was, and how lucky we were to happen upon it. We recommend it without reservation.

Review: The others have said perfectly, this is easily one of the best fantasy books I've ever read. Well worth trying to see if Amazon can get it for you. :)

Summary: if only they had a way of going beyond 5 stars
Review: when i read this book i thought it would be another fantasy book. but i was wrong. the book displays well researched information on the five magics it is about (alchemy, thaumaturgy, magic, socerey & wizardly). i have to say that it is probably the best book i have ever read. it revolves around a thaumaturge apprentice, alodar, & his path to regain his heritage. along the way he learns the basics of all the magics, and learns he is destined to be an archmage (master of the 5 magics) and must save mankind. i urge you to purchase this book & hope you enjoy reading it.
