Rating: Summary: A great read! Review: First off, I would like to state that I am an author and am actually in the process of getting a book published as I type this. So I write this both as a writer and as a literary fan and long time Fantasy reader. The first thing I noticed while reading this book was that it is a very simple read. There are not very many characters that you must keep up with and the plot and sub-plots are very easy to follow along with. The language that Coe uses is that of anyone who speaks common english and it is not necessary to read something through twice in order to understand what is happening (such as in Lord of the Rings). The suspence of finding out who the traitor is somehow sneaks up on you without you realizing it and before you know it, Coe sets up a perfectly written tone shift and progression. The plot turns and revelations are - as a previous reviewer has pointed out - very simple, yet unpredictable and enticing. One cannot go into reading this book (or any other book for that matter) thinking too much. You should read this book and let your imagination take you into Coe's world - which is completely and easily reachable due to his simple discription and character development - and live the magnificence of a very FUN book. I look foward to reading it's sequels in the very near future (I already have them on my book shelf) and I say that for someone knew to Fantasy (or even to reading itself) or for a veteran such as myself, you will not be dissapointed in this book.
Rating: Summary: Child of Amarid Review: I am almost fifteen and have been reading fantasy since the age of nine. I must say that David Coe's 1st book of the Lon Tobyn chronicle has been one of the best. He has created very real and intising characters, that have had to work through countless obsticles and adventures. This book contains everything that I was looking for: majic, a twisting history, adventure, excitement, even romance. I recommend this book to every fantasy, and sci-fi lover above the age of about eleven.
Rating: Summary: a wonderful tale for those who don't like fantasy Review: I don't usually read fantasy, but i was encouraged to buy the book while visiting the university of the south. i have enjoyed it immensly and look forward to reading the second book
Rating: Summary: Screw Kirkus Reviews, I liked this book! Review: I enjoyed reading this book from front to back, and probably had to answer a few questions at work since I was actually thinking of the book instead of what I was being paid to do. The folks at Kirkus need to get a kick in the butt. I look forward to the next book in the seies, and will buy it the day it's available.
Rating: Summary: Waiting for the next book! Review: I got done reading this book like a month ago... even though it ended to fast I loved it all the way through and could not but it down for the love of me :) He made charecters to love which does not seem to happen to often... now I'm praying for the next book to come out fast :)
Rating: Summary: Refreshingly good Review: I have read so many books that I have a very hard time finding good books to read. This book was much better than most of the new books today. I have read the reviews and while there is some truth to the negatives, it is still a very good book. For a first book, it is exceptional. Authors tend to get better and I will be looking forward to reading the rest of the series. If you are looking for a fun book and like to read, try this book (especially if like me, you never agree with professional critics). If you want a short first grade level book like some of the other reviewers, look elsewhere.
Rating: Summary: A dull fantasy Review: I have to agree with the Kirkus review--David Coe's novel is dull, dull, DULL! The character development was particularly...well...dull; one sorcerer here was pretty much like the other. There was little dramatic tension here and the love story between the two young protagonists was, you know, dull. There's no way I'll waste my time reading the sequel
Rating: Summary: I found it imposible to put down Review: I have to say this is one of the best books i have ever read. The story was very well written. I had to buy the hardback edition to replace the paper back (the spine gave out) becouse i kept rereading it. I am eagerly awaiting to see if he will follow up "The Outlanders" novel which picks up four years after this book.
Rating: Summary: An excellent 1st book about believable wizards! Review: I just read this book. It describes very believable wizards. I equate it with McCaffrey's "The White Dragon" and Donaldson's "The Power That Preserves". As a D&D roleplayer, I completely enjoyed the development of "Children of Amarid's" mages and their power. Too many times authors create wizards to be either physically weak characters with awesome magical power or sword/sorcery types. A must read for wizards and wizard-wannabes. I wonder what Coe could do with psionic wizards!!!
Rating: Summary: Honestly, the best book I have ever read. Review: I like to consider myself a fantasy connoisseur, having read everything from Tolkien to Jacques, LeGuin to Weis. I enjoy the genre very much. When I received this book as a gift, I must confess I expected it to be another ho-hum piece of trash, like such which have become so popular these days. I was totally unprepared for the riveting universe this book brought me in to. The setting, the characters, the mood - all are lovingly coaxed into one's mind by a masterful artisan of words, and I personally could not put the book down from the first page to the last. Congratulations on this wonderful work, Mr. Coe, and thank you for sharing a little bit of yourself with all of us.
