Rating: Summary: The Person Under the Sign Labeled Me Speaks: Review: Okay, so how many people have read DEALING WITH DRAGONS? How many people like heroines who make up their own minds? I don't know the numbers, but I do know that this is one of the greatest books I've ever read. And I've read quite a few. Eleret, the heroine, is strong, a little confused by strange customs, but determined to make out okay. Daner, the handsome young lord, is a little dull, but gallant. And Karvonen is - well, Karvonen is a thief. Everybody should read this book! Signed, Sabriel
Rating: Summary: Hm Review: Raven Ring was a good book while I read it. Now, I can't stand reading it again. I'd rather reread anything else. I didn't like the end either. What was the point of fretting over the raven ring if it was going to be destroyed or confiscated in the end? And good grief, Daner and Karvonen have known Eleret for only what, two and a half days?! And they both are courting her! When I put this book down, I wished that I hadn't borrowed it. A waste.
Rating: Summary: Darned good book Review: The best of Patricia Wrede's books often leave me with a big grin on my face while I'm reading it. This is one of those. It is a delightful work of high fantasy, set in the same world as some of her novels of several years ago, but independent in story. The story moves along briskly and is highly entertaining, but the true brilliance of the book lies in its characters, who are always consistently believable and entertaining.
Rating: Summary: This is a book that can be read over and over again Review: The characters are alive and enjoyable. The history and background of the world is colorful and detailed. Miss Wrede does not falter in the quality of her naration, and the story goes on beautifuly. I have always loved this book. It just adds to the increasing respect and admiration I have for Miss Wrede.
Rating: Summary: 6 out of five stars Review: The plot like all wrede books, is engaging, but would be flavorless without the incredibly belivable and uncliched characters; Eleret, deadly, practical, naive, intellegent, with a soldier's discpline and a warrior's honor; Karvonen, my favorite, brilliant, charming, incorigable, contradictory and honorable; Daner, overconfident, honest, selfabsorbed, very obviously noble and used to it. All the other humorous side charactrs, the detailed societies and cultures. One thing I particularly loved was the oaths and phrases the characters used, like "swearing like a kulseth fisherman with a knot in his line," "not on the emperor's backside," "have my hide to patch his mainsail" and any number of references to fish, due to the coastalness of the city' beached, dried, stewing in the sun... It just WORKED really really wellLizard
Rating: Summary: Great Realistic Characters Review: THE RAVEN RING has some of the best and most unique characters I have ever come across, every single person that comes into the scene has their own picks and pans, which are played out quite well in this great Lyra book. Another book that I've found that comes close to the intriguing mystery and sexual tension that was found in this book was also discovered in CROWN DUEL and COURT DUEL...both were just as catchy as THE RAVEN RING, and all 3 books are a must in ever fantasy lover's library.
Rating: Summary: VIVID, EXCITING, GREAT CHARACTERIZATION!!! Review: The Raven Ring is a book that can't be put down once started. The mystery, fantasy, and description intertwine into a great story! The peoples and friction between them give this book interest. The brave Cilhar to the mysterious Shee. The struggle for the ring and the attacks upon Eleret that prompt many questions through out the book gives tension. The only problem I had was that the book stopped. I'd like to see a lot more of the Lyra series. Fans of The Enchanted Forest Cronicles will enjoy this book, though it is a little heavier reading. Buy the book, it's worth the money and the wait!
Rating: Summary: Fun adventure! A great read. Review: The Raven Ring is a favourite of mine. In fact, I've bought 4 copies over the years--friends seem to hang onto it, when I want to read it again! Well worth the price of the hardcover (but don't loan that one). A smart, capable woman on a dangerous journey--great fun for any age.
