Summary: Classic Monsters Return!
Review: I've seen a few complaints about the artwork about how it is sub-par and in black and white. I'm sorry but the artwork in here is superb. This is the kind of world where you really should be thinking in terms of those old horror flicks. Most of the critters in here I recognize as old Ravenloft specific monsters brought back for the new edition. This is not a bad thing. I thoroughly enjoyed reading and using these monsters on unsuspecting players. One thing any D&D game can never have too much of are monsters to challenge the heroes. Great work.

Rating: 3 stars
Summary: Some great templates but . . .
Review: There's very little else going for this book.

The slavishly alphabetical structure, combined with the lack of a good index, makes it difficult to find what you're looking for.

Plus, some of the classic beasties are included, but others are excluded in favour of some rather odd choices. On the whole, a worthwhile addition to the collection of any DM, if only for some of the nifty undead templates, but an imperfect book at best.

Summary: Great Book, Poor CR's
Review: Thouroughly enjoyed this book. The monsters are both imaginative and interesting. There seems to be an abundance of undead, but I expected that with a Ravenloft sourcebook. I really liked all of the dangerous plants, as well as the figurines, but...

...there are some serious challenge rating problems. The grave scarab, while weak, stands a chance of killing a low level character (especially one in full plate, where the scarab would be mostly protected while burrowing!). My main gripe with CR is the Radiant Spirit. I understand that CR 110 is a misprint, but BOY WHAT A MISPRINT! And you have to understand that some people are stupid enough to argue with the DM that if the book says 110, they deserve 110. Another creature, the crimson bones, has a CR of 2. While it is also relatively easy to kill, it constitutes a fair chance of killing a player. I'd have given it at least a 3.

Even with these few mistakes, it is still a very good book, and one I plan to use in my campaign. I also liked the artwork.
