Rating: Summary: Clancy knock-off Review: Way too much setup at the beginning with the Jim Martel-This is your life! section. The fast paced scene changes are the same as pioneered by Clancy years ago. Once you get past the setup, the action is engaging, making the book hard to put down. Just remember... it's *fiction*. I didn't care much for NG as a politico, but he's a reasonably fair fiction writer. Maybe we'll get part 2 now that he's got some time on his hands.
Rating: Summary: A Great Revisionist Read... Review: This book paints a very interesting picture of how the world could have ended up. Somewhat difficult to believe the large scale demobilization with such a ominus threat looming.A very entertaining read. Maybe Mr.Gingrich ought to stick to writing.
Rating: Summary: It's a very well written alternate history. Review: This was a well thought out senario peppered with real life names both American and foreign. The action scenes are fast paced but sometimes a little graphic. I found the book by accident 2 years ago and couldn't put it down. The "to be continued" at the end was a disappointment and an encouragment at the same time. After 2 years I want the sequel.
Rating: Summary: Good Alternate History Book, Sequel Please! Review: Nice start for a book that appears to have more editions coming since the ending is open. This distracted a bit from the book but overall it was well written with plenty of action. Good detail of military technology and strategy helps those who are not entirely familar with the jargon.
Rating: Summary: Plausible, entertaining, fast read, where is Part II? Review: Combines historical fact with interesting "what if" scenario, well written, hard to put down. Only disappointment, three years later, where is Part II?
Rating: Summary: Above average read, interesting mix of historical characters Review: I read the book while sitting on a plane during a trip. I found the beginning a bit slow, but then the book picked up. The lead American is a bit to cliche, i.e. Bruce Willis type action hero, but likeable enough. Lame ending without the continuation in print. I also think the leak in the White House was a bit unrealistic given the paranoia of the day.
Rating: Summary: Great entry into the alternate history genre Review: 1945 was a well-written book. Gingrich has taken an oft-used "what if" (What if the Nazis won World War II?) and spun a plausible and exciting story. I especially love the part in which a famous Tennessee World War I vet makes an appearance with his posse. The only problem with the book? WHERE IS THE SEQUEL!?!?
Rating: Summary: Excellent, but where's the continuation? Review: I can't add much more to what everyone else has said about this book. It's well written and the extrapolations from the basic "what-if" scenario are very plausible. But it is obviously just the first part of a much larger work. A "sequel" would be a second complete story that picks up where the first complete story leaves off. 1945 is not a complete story, it's just a very good start of a much longer tale. Perhaps if enough readers call for the rest of the story, the publishers will prevail on the authors to finish what they started.
Rating: Summary: great book, where is the sequel? Review: I thought this was a great book when I read it two years ago. It is easy to pick up and hard to put down? I am flustered by the fact that it says "to be continued" at the end. After two years where is the sequel? We are still waiting.
Rating: Summary: Very good book, a few too many cliches. Review: I thought this was a very good book, especially for a collaboration. The historical "what-if" was fascinating. The technical writing was good, and made me glad we got the war over early in '45 rather than when all those jets would have come online! The characters were a little cliched (overmatched but scrappy and resourceful Americans, super teutonic German fighting machines) but not so much that it ruined the book. The climactic battle scene was way too long. So much so, in fact, that the authors apparently ran out of room and had to end the book with a "To be continued..." promise that has yet to be kept. Where in the heck is the sequel? I guess if my worst complaint is about the lack of a sequel, I must have liked the book.
