Rating: Summary: Bad. Very bad. Review: A lame attempt to traverse the terrain Robert Harris already covered- far better -in "Fatherland". Even though this book is called "1945", most of it occurs in 1946. Go figure. Gingrich's characters are dull and the book slows to a glacial pace when his American hero steps onto the page. Was I the only one disturbed by the fact that the Nazi characters are the best written? Maybe the worst book I ever read.
Rating: Summary: Great alternate history for WWII buffs Review: Gingrich/Forstchen write an amazing tale, a real page-turner for WWII buffs who have always wondered "what if..." the plot is plausable the action fast paced and Forstchen brings out the war as catalyst for mans advancement theme every bit as well as in his Lost Regiment series. Waiting for Forstchen to get back to this project is becoming painful. Aircorps buffs Gothas V. RATOCats... Nuff' said!! FORSTCHEN get to it man!!
Rating: Summary: Inventive entry into the growing alternate history field Review: I enjoyed reading this book very much. Newt has a good grasp of the history of the time the book is set in. Using Otto Skorzeny, Hitlers master commando, as the major protaganist in the novel is both entertaining , and accurate, this is just the type of operation that Skorzeny lived for ,and excelled at. Only one negative.....where is the rest of the book???? Bring on the sequel Newt.
Rating: Summary: In desperate need of a sequel Review: Dont kid yourself, this book is good. The historical characters in the book are, guess what, IN CHARACTER!. Being somewhat of a bigraphical and historical buff, I was sceptical but by the middle of the book I was unable to put it down. The biggest disappointment is that it ran out of pages at the hight of my interest.
Rating: Summary: compares well with other alternate histories. Review: When I first saw this book, I thought that there was no way that germay could have stayed out of WW2 and so I was sceptical going in. Having read many books of this type as well as other science fiction and fantasy (Average of 1 per day) I can say that this rates very high on my list, and I will watch eagerly for sequels. The way the authors concieve of keeping germany from declaring war on the U.S.A. was plausable and could very well have happened. A rate of 5 stars however needs a compleation which this book lacks. If the sequels ever get written and if they turn out as well as the start, then I will probaly give a 5 stars for the series.
Rating: Summary: Amateur start - terrific ending Review: Being English, and also an avid reader of history, I was very interested to get an American's viewpoint on a European war. I found the style of writing at first a bit amateurish but by the middle I was enthralled. At the end I couldn't put it down( this usually happens with Robert Ludlum books) due to the increased pace of the story, the familiarity of the characters and the interesting details that were emerging based on historical fact. I've only given it 4 stars as the disappointment in not being able to read a sequel was very hard to bear. So come on Newt, you said the book was to be continued, don't behave like a politician and start breaking promises..
Rating: Summary: Entertaining read Review: This book got me so much into it that I read it in one sitting! It had an interesting, fast-paced plot and a soap-opera, "pulpy" feeling to it. If you are looking for a serious read you might as well read a book about the real WWII. I did not give it 5 stars because near the end it becomes too technical and dry (I skimmed those sections without spoling my enjoyment, though). Of course, right-wing politics permeate throughout the book but this happens in a subtle, non-distracting way. Fun read, strongly recommended.
Rating: Summary: Excellent book...Disappointed at the lag time for sequel!!! Review: I don't read as much as I should, but when I do I want it to be a story like this. This was my first foray into alternative history subjects and I found the events and story line extremely plausible based on my knowlege of WWII. I enjoyed the book tremendously and was extremely disappointed when I found the story was to be continued in the next book. This not being enough of an injury, we have all been waiting years for the next issue. I also understand there may be actually 2 more books before this story is through. Somebody needs to get Forstchen back to work on this project he has left hanging for far too long!
Rating: Summary: VERY P;LAUSIBLE ALTERNATIVE SCENARIO Review: I would rate this a five of five star book for action and a four star for the scenario. We do not see enough of Hitler, but are primed for a final show down between Harrison-Hitler and Skorzeny-Martell. I, like many others, are waiting for the sequel. I hope it appears soon!
Rating: Summary: FACTUAL IN AN ALTERNATE WORLD Review: FIRST OF ALL I GREATLY ADMIRE AND RESPECT MR.GINGRICH. I WAS BORN IN OAK RIDGE; LIVED THERE FOR 2 YEARS FROM 1947 TO 1949. WE THEN MOVED TO KINGSTON, TN. MY DAD HIRED ON AT K-25 IN 1945 AFTER RETURNING FROM EUROPE.HE LATER TRANSFERRED TO X-10 TAKING A MEDICAL RETIREMENT IN 1979. I WAS FORTUNATE TO HAVE WORKED ALSO AT K-25 FROM 1975 TO 1996 WHEN I WAS DOWNSIZED. THE BOOKS ALTERNATE HISTORY ESPECIALLY ABOUT EAST TENNESSEE WAS GREAT FUN. MOST OF THE GEOGRAPHICAL LOCATIONS WERE ACCURATE ENOUGH TO BE VERY REAL. I WOULD HOPE THAT MR. GINGRICH AND CO-AUTHOR WOULD FINISH THE SERIES. NOW FOR THE SAD PART. MR. CLINTON HAS SO DEMORALIZED AMERICA AND ALLOWED OUR GREAT MILITARY TO FAMISH THAT THE SCENARIO MAY NOT BE ALL THAT UNREAL. GOD BLESS AMERICA AND NEWT GINGRICH. THANK YOU FOR ALLOWING ME THESE FEW WORDS. JERRY W. WALDEN 1227 JAMES FERRY ROAD L-31 KINGSTON, TENNESSEE 37763 HONANDTTBEAR@WEBTV.NET
