Summary: A good read, but not Weber's best
Review: A bit predictable, but good action, some interesting ideas. I liked the characters, and I'll probably read it again.

I'd check this one out of the library before buying it, if I were you.

If you want Weber at his best, read On Basilisk Station.

Summary: Weber's absolute best.
Review: Although I am a HUGE Honor Harrington fan, I have to say that Weber's books sometimes drag on endlessly. He apparently believes that ten words are always better than one, ten paragraphs always better than one, etc. The Apocalypse Troll is an exception -- fast-paced with just enough detail. I loved it.

Summary: Not bad, not original, but not bad...
Review: Another fairly solid book by Mr. Weber. The plot to this book is not original by any means, but for what its worth, it is a well written and entertaining little novel. I always like David Weber's ability to create a detailed universe and this novel is no exception. However, if you are looking for a more original plot, stick with his Honor Harrington series, because this book recycles plot elements seen in numerous other sci-fi books. So, if you are looking for a light read, this book should fit...if you're looking for something to stimulate the mind, skip to something else.

Summary: An excellent non-series book from Weber
Review: Apocolypse Troll in a nutshell is about a extremely xenophobic alien race from the future who go back in time to change the past in order to prevent themselves from being defeated. They use genetically manipulated humans called Trolls to fight for them.

Apocolypse Troll follows one woman from the future, and one troll as one works to take over the world, and the other works to stop it... in the early 21st century.

Although I'm a huge fan of David Weber, I must admit that many of his books of late have not been up to snuff. His earliest works, "Path of the Fury," "On Basalisk Station" and others appeal to me the most. I feel many of his later works (the later Honor books and the latest books he's co-authored) have lost something. What it is, I'm not sure.

That said, this particular book found it again. There was a freshness there that caught me off guard. The character interactions were believeable, and it had a flowing, continuous story line that made it hard to put down the book. When I read this book, I felt like I did when I read "Path of the Fury" or Mutineer's Moon." Excitment and all the good things that come with a well crafted story.

It's probably not the most original book, but it's fun. I really, really liked this one. For the military Sci-fi fan, this one's a gem.

Summary: Excellent book...a well-crafted, interesting read.
Review: As an unashamed David Weber addict, I had high hopes for his latest effort; I was not disappointed. This latest novel is chock full of interesting characters and does a good job of giving human faces to those in the military, both in the future and in the present. Mr. Webers usual deft character building is happily present, resulting in characters that you can care about and whose motivations are understandable. I only wish this book had been longer, but I wish this about all of Mr. Webers work!

Summary: A competent enough work, but lacking his later flair.
Review: As you may know, "Apocalypse Troll" is actually an older work by David Weber, which is being released for the first time now. While an engaging read, it's not quite as good as his later book, with characterization of the Troll being even sketchier then usual for a villain. Over all, not bad but I wouldn't want for somebody to get introduced to DW with this.

Summary: An interesting early work
Review: AT is an early work of Weber's, recently released to meet audience demand. It's not a bad tale (and certainly better than many other big-name authors early work), but it lacks the polish and sophistication that his later work shows. That said, it's still a rollicking good read and eminently suitable for vacation reading.
