Rating: Summary: Depends on your style preference. I LOVED IT!!! Review: I was surprised at the range of ratings. I am an avid reader (esp. fantasy) and I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It had magic, romance, sacrifice, friendship, honor, etc. I think the difference in ratings reflects the different tastes people have. My brother and I never agree on which fantasy book was the best. His favorite is my least favorite and vice versa. You'll have to take a chance and decide for yourself. Personally, I can't wait for a sequel. To the author: Keep up the good work!
Rating: Summary: Nothing that a little shoe black can't fix. Review: I had somewhat high hopes for this book. My girlfriend has athing for dragons and fantasy literature, so I bought the hardcoverfor her as a christmas present. Since starting it in February, she's only managed to read it in short bursts, and hasn't completed it yet and she's an extremely avid reader. So I picked it up in order to find out why.The answer appears in the first three chapters. Agonizingly amateurish delivery that's about as subtle as a monkey wrench to the skull. This is too bad because Ms. (Mrs.?) Bertin seems extremely enthusiastic about the subject matter; enthusiasm makes me want to like the story and when I just can't, like in this case, it makes me feel like I'm kicking a puppy. If you're wondering what I mean about lack of subtlety, try re-reading the dialogue between Linden and Lleld in chapter 1. Do people really talk like that? Maybe bad actors, but I can't think of any examples from my life. It's to stilted and full of awkward pacing; to many descriptions in the "he said" vein, and this problem plagues the entire book as far as I can see. There is also a distinct lack of meaningful setting. The world in which the story is set appears to be an indistinguishable hodgepodge of fantasy standards. There is no cohesion or logic behind the societies present, which leads me to believe that the world is intended to be a tissue paper thin backdrop for the character's actions. The plot, as it stands right now (I'm not done with the book) is so predictable that I can't see myself caring about what's going to happen, and therefore I probably won't finish the book (something which I detest). Maybe things pick up near the end, but I don't think I'll make it that far.
Rating: Summary: Not very meaty, not very interesting, a so-so first book Review: This is quite simply not that good of a book. I am an avid fantasy reader and this book is very very thin fare indeed. The characters are all done in a very sketchy manner especially the 'villians'. The plot is not at all interesting. Its quite obvious the author was using stock fantasy elements in this first effort. Now In Legend Born is also a first effort but it is a remarkable book. Anyone who found Last Dragonlord better then average, I think just my humble opinion nothing more, hasn't read much fantasy to arrive at that conclusion. This book is outstanding in only one thing: its ordinaryness very very predictable book.
Rating: Summary: A teriffic book! Review: The book "The Last Dragon Lord" was a great book. The plot had many fun and unexpected twists. All the charactors were well thought out and over all it was a great book. I can't wait 'till the sequal comes out in November.
Rating: Summary: One of the best books I have ever read!! Review: "The Last Dragonlord" is wonderful book full of great characteration and life. It is a truly remarkable first novel and I can honestly say it is the best book I have ever read. This is coming from some who is running out of room on her book shelves! This is on such a grand scale that I think it should be made into a motion picture. This is coming from the untimate film buff! Joanne Bertin is one of the most talented fantasy authors around and this is only her first novel. May she write many more for the world to enjoy!!
Rating: Summary: very thin on substance Review: This is a difficult book to rate. I felt the effort was there, and there were some interesting ideas, but it never really gelled into a worthwhile read. I felt the antagonists in this book were totally overmatched. On the side of good we have powerful immortal dragons with many powers that are introduced suddenly when the story in anyway threatens the protagonists. And in the other corner we have a wizard who schemes with a small coterie of malcontents but who never seems to do too much. The romance in this book felt too forced. Just once I'd like to read a fantasy novel where two characters fall in love because they actually have some common interests. The rest of the book felt thin. Other than the linden and his girlfrien everone else was a pretty much stock character. It wouldn't have taken too much edeting to have maken this book better. As it was this book was pretty forgettable.
Rating: Summary: I loved this book. Review: I couldn't put this book down. Beautiful intrigue and a nice twist on the dragon society. I can't wait for the next one!!1
Rating: Summary: Romantic, intriguing, Great! Review: A wonderful book! I had trouble putting it down, on the contrary of some other readers. The relationships between Linden and Maurynna was so detailed in the way they had be together. Joanne Bertin did an excellent job of detail.
Rating: Summary: A great (and romantic) read by a new author!! Review: I thought the book was great -- stayed up all night to finish it, actually! Fast-moving plot, good tension. I loved it! Some notice has been made about how she tells and doesn't show -- but readers should be aware that writers as much as anyone else need time to perfect their craft... And she's got a really good start! highly recommended and I'm eagerly awaiting the sequel!
Rating: Summary: Dragon Lovers Alert Review: I have finished reading The Last Dragonlord. It was very entertaining. Especially since I have long been a fan of dragons. I am awaiting the sequel. All dragon fans should read this one.
