Summary: Questionable judgement call from the publisher
Review: This is one of those "love it or hate it" books, judging by the other reviews on this site. The "hate it" reviewers seemed to be mostly annoyed by a writing style they called "amateurish" and a predictable plot, but mostly they complained about stock characters and cliches. I started out as one of the "hate it"s, but after the first few pages I started to put my finger on why I kept having flashbacks to jr. high school -- this book was never meant for a 31 year old!

The reading level in Last Dragonlord is about 15 years or under -- a step above the Harry Potter books, but not a huge step. Several plot elements seem, IMHO, to read like a 13-year-old girl's daydreams; romance novel plotline, being able to change into a dragon and fly away, intelligent horse companions. I suspect that most of the "love it" reviews were by teenage girls. As soon as I got over my prejudice that I should be reading an adult-level novel, I began to enjoy myself.

The only reason I can come up with for it's classification in the Fantasy category is that there are a few passages that are a bit too sexualized for younger readers. Tor Fantasy should have edited them out and shelved TLD in the "young adult" section of the bookstore.

So, if you're a teenager with average reading skills and just LOVE dragons, I can honestly recommend this book. Otherwise, you may feel annoyed that you spent an afternoon reading it.

Summary: Gotta Love Dragons
Review: Let's see. A few heros. A few villians. Some magic. Some shape changing. A lost-soul mate. A well guarded secret. And the adventure of an extremely long lifetime.

Yep, this book has my vote. Imagine being a normal person one day and the next realizing that you have a soul twin who just happens to be one of the most influential people in the world, who incidentally is also able to transform into a dragon and soar the skies. Imagine living alone for over 600 years searching for the other half of your soul, fearing it is already too late, and then realizing she's right underneath your nose.

A good plot with many twists, a handsome guy, a pretty girl, and a certain amount of humor make this book one of the best I have ever read. I reccomend it wholeheartedly, and I will reccomend the sequel whenever it comes out.

Summary: One of the best books I have ever read!
Review: When I started reading this book I expected the same old stereotypical characters and setting, but I was surprised. This is one of the most imaginative and unique books I have ever read. I honestly don't understand how someone cannot enjoy this book as much as I did. It had an intriguing plot that made it impossible to put down.

Summary: What a waste of an afternoon...
Review: This is book has all the elements I absolutely despise in fantasy writing. The characters are stock and completely predictable and boring. The contrived plot is humdrum and of no real interest. Worse of all, the writing is on the level of a semi-literate adolescent.

I cannot believe that Joan D. Vinge gave this book a good review. Her own works, "Winter Queen" and "Summer Queen" are so superior to this, that I expected her praise to be more difficult to earn.

If you like strict fantasy without the strong sci-fi elements J.D. Vinge has in her books, try George R.R. Martin's "Game of Thrones." It is absolutely thrilling. Anne Bishop's Dark Jewel Thrilogy is also quite good.

Summary: Wonderful reading!
Review: This was honestly one of the best books I've ever read. The author is imaginative, articulate, and intelligent. The Last Dragonlord is a work of pure talent. And just try not to fall in love with Linden<G>

Summary: Engaging read!
Review: I found "The Last Dragonlord" excellent, particularly in the fact that the Dragonlords were presented realistically. Linden Rathan is a noble and amusing character, and along with his Dragonlord companions, Kief and Tarlna, he vows to find his soultwin and keep her (Maurynna), and help the city of Casna with regency troubles. Althume (the mage), is a very nasty character (as Anne McCaffrey puts it), and it is satisfying yet sad when he suffers for his beliefs in the Fraternity (a group determined to get rid of Dragonlords). Otter (the bard), is the comedian in this story, and he helps his friends through the struggles they may face. And last but not least, Maurynna is the brave captain of the Sea Mist, who confronts her internal struggles regarding Linden Rathen and her emerging draconic half. I hope that other readers will enjoy "The Last Dragonlord" as much as I did. Kudos to Joanne Bertin, a great new writer!

Summary: Ok, but just OK
Review: I'm rather astonished by all the people giving this book five stars. All I can say is you don't get out enough.

The Last Dragonlord is a little on the dumb side. The women characters are annoying, and the bad guys are one-dimensional. Even the concept of were-dragons isn't explained to a level that makes any sense. It's a fairly fast and easy read--she uses short sentences and chapters, and likes to write cliffhangers from chapter to chapter, but I find this contrived.

There are some nice moments in the book, to be fair, but this is not one of the better offerings by women fantasists. I recommend JV Jones, Elizabeth Haydon and Robin Hobb if you are looking for a good, intelligent read. This one is not too bad, but it's also nothing special.

Summary: this book is one of my favourite books of all time
Review: I love this book because it has romance, mystery, magic, fantasy and science fiction all in one book. I've read quite a few books which include dragons (e.g. Anne McCafrrey's pern books and the lost realm books) but never one where they are half human. I love the way how the characters are introduced and then meet. I also love the horse in this story even though he has a minor role in the book. In this book the horse can actually understand what people say. I cant wait to read the second book in this series. I wonder what will have happened to all the charecters. The great thing about this book is that you can read it as a story in its own right but it leaves enough unsaid things for there to be a follow up book.
