Rating: Summary: Captivating from the start Review: I stumbled upon this book accidentlly and absolutely loved it. I was so into the characters, I read through it so fast in anticpation of where the book was going. The characters find a way into your heart that I was sad when the book was over. I am buying it so I can re-read it slowly this time. The sequel was just as good and am looking foward to the release of the third.
Rating: Summary: I stayed up all night reading it. Review: I'm not a teenager, in fact, I'm a grandmother, so saying that this book is too juvenile for anyone not a teen is a bit arrogant. I read many books, but for pure escapism, I really enjoy a good 'fantasy' novel! Some of those 'critically acclaimed' books for the 'discriminating reader' are just plain boring, although not all are. Personally, I like reading about dragons, I have quite a few dragon 'stuff' candles, etc around the house. I truly enjoyed this book, so much in fact, that I stayed up all night until 4 am reading, until I just could not stay awake anymore. I just didn't want to put the book down. I finished it the next morning, after a good nap! For a first book, this was absolutely great! If only we could all write as well for a first book! I hope that there is a retro book, detailing Lindens past as well. Perhaps even one that details the shamen's war that created the DragonLords. I started out with the 2nd in the series, and once it was finished, (I stayed up all night to read that one too!) I had to go find the 1st one to read. When are there going to be more?
Rating: Summary: The BEST! Review: My name is Erika, im turning 11 in one week and this is the GREATEST book i have ever read!!! I have read a lot of good books but this one, and its sequal are the best i have ever read. Not only was it good, it was long, which means you dont just buy the book, read it, toss it on a bookshelf and forget about it. Dragonlords are humans that can turn into dragons when they want to, and included in that power they also have healing power, which they can only use when they are dragons, coldfire, a kind of fire that can be used like a torch and can be held, and mindspeak-they can talk to each other in their minds. They also have soultwins, basicly the other half of them that they were meant to live with-sort of like a husband/wife that was set up for you before you were born. This book is great for anyone who likes romance, adventure, and fantasy in one. E-mail me at dragon_bookworm227@hotmail.com to talk about books or find out more about the dragonlord seris!!!! I cant WAIT until the next book comes out, i dont know what i will do when Joanne Bertin decides that she wont write any more of the books!!!
Rating: Summary: An interesting twist on dragons Review: I found The Last Dragonlord to be an interesting take on dragons. For a first book, Bertin does a farily good job of developing an idea into a full blown book. The Last Dragonlord is long, which is good and bad. It took me a bit longer than usual to get through it, which was nice; it's not a 3-hour read like many books. However, it does drag through the 500 pages, with the plot developing slowly. The story could have been written in half the number of pages. The book is pretty good if you're looking for a book that has dragons and magic, but it's going to tax your brain immensely. There are some predictable portions, but the book is a good read if you just let your brain relax.
Rating: Summary: I Love This Book!!! Review: I am twelve and I read this book when I was eleven. Sure, there were some inappropriate parts, but all in all I enjoyed it. I understood all of it perfectly. But this might be because I have a high reading level for my age. I read Phantom of the Opera in third grade.
Rating: Summary: Excellent Book! Review: I found this book, and the one following it, at the local bookstore. I cannot believe it took me this long to find this series. It is delightful! The book kept me up way too late at night, and I became so attached to the characters I was in tears at times. It is a great read for any fantasy lover!
Rating: Summary: An opinion Review: I think I will warn you before hand: If you are looking for a summary on the plot or characters or such, you will not find it hear. This is basically an opinion on what some people have written here. Some people are saying that this book had good content for teenagers, although the language was not suitable. I am 14 years old, read this book when I was 13, and understood every word of it. I love to read fantasy novels, and this book was no exception. Although, I must admit, when she first introduced the characters without really introducing them, she had me confused for a time. But she also cleared things up quickly. So, my point is, please don't say the language wasn't suitable for young readers when you are not a young reader yourself. Thank you for your time.
Rating: Summary: An excellent read Review: I found this book very enjoyable and gripping. My roommate brought it back with her this semester, and she told me I had to read it. I started it, less than wisely, late in the evening, and proceeded to stay up *far* later than I should have reading it. The concept of were-dragons ('were' from the Old English 'wer' meaning 'man') is one from several medieval French tales, and it has not been commonly used in modern fantasy literature. This uncommon element gave the book a sense of freshness and originality. Sadly, the story was over far too soon for my liking, and I now have to wait (impatiently) for my roommate to finish reading the sequel, Dragon and Pheonix, before I am allowed to touch it. Hopefully that will not be too far in the future. The story of Linden Rathen is excellent, and one lovers of fantasy and dragons should read.
Rating: Summary: I'm sorry--this book was dumb Review: Too sexual for kids, too juvenile for adults. I for one am tired of seeing dragons and unicorns exploited in poorly conceived and badly written fantasy. The fact that Ms. Bertin uses the term "were-dragon" shows that she did not bother to do any research into lycanthropy, or else she would have known that an animal has to be a mammal in order to be a "were" something. Perhaps this flies with the pseudo-dragon admirer, but any true draconophile would be offended by the silly way in which the nature is portrayed in this book.
Rating: Summary: A Good Beginning -- we all have to start somewhere... Review: ...I gave this book a 4 at first thought, but then moved it to a 3, though a very high 3.... As a first work from a lady who to my knowledge received no formal training or schooling in literature, this is a very enjoyable writing. I had been away from books for some years and this was the one that drew me back to chewing through a novel a week. I found it's pace easy going, as one other mentioned a good afternoon read, and the temper good. The characters presented here seem very real, and you quickly find yourself identifying with their conflicts. Such is key to involving any reader in any novel. It has been noted by some that the style of writing leans towards teenagers, and that the level of wording may not have been appropriate for them. I strongly disagree as I am a good 15 years older and found this most enjoyable, not to mention in the middle of the Fantasy section of my local Borders book store. On her first effort I commend Joanne Bertin, not only for putting a book such as this forward, but for weathering the not so constructive critics of her work. Well done, I look forward to your sequel.
