Rating: Summary: If you like to be scared, this one is for you. Review: A mix of John Grisham and Tom Clancy in style, Barnett brings to the fore a terrifying (but VERY real) scenario where the Federal government abuses its power and tramples the rights of state to protect its citizens. In this case, the Feds are shipping spent nuclear fuel rods and plutonium from North Carolina through South Carolina with disasterour consequences because of the arrogance of two men in the highest levels of government. The arragance of the two men drives the issue to the point where the entire union is at risk and a nuclear war in North America seems imminent. Absolutely breathtaking.
Rating: Summary: A gripping and fast-paced read Review: A Single Star by Stan Barnett is a political thriller about shipment of hazardous plutonium and uranium waste that threatens the lives of all of South Carolina. Only the South Carolina governor and his allies can take a stand against the corrupt machination of the President and his pawns, even as ruthless outside terrorists strive to take advantage of the perilous situations. A gripping and fast-paced read, A Single Star is especially recommended reading for political issue oriented suspense thriller enthusiasts.
Rating: Summary: One Terrific Ride Review: A Single Star is one terrific ride. Barnett creates a tempo like Baldacci or Clancy at their best, and doesn't let up until the end of the story. The characters and the non-stop plot grabbed me from the beginning; I didn't want to put it down until I was done. If you know anyone who likes a good thriller, tell them about this one.
Rating: Summary: South Carolina page turner Review: As a South Carolinian I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. It combines eco-terrorism,international intrigue, local, state, and federal politics with more than a hint of our illustrious past. There is a mixture of probable and improbable events that rapidly escalate to a satisfying conclusion. It is a page turner.
Rating: Summary: As good as the best sellers! Review: Barnett has written a great thriller. His writing is wonderful so the reader is kept involved and spell-bound. His character development is excellent. The story is believable and scary. It is a thought provoking book considering the terrorism in the world today. Barnett seems to have researched his book well, thus adding to the realism. Well done!
Rating: Summary: A Single Star Rocks! Review: I am a big fiction reader of Clancey and Grisham and found A Single Star to be one of the best thrillers I have read in some time. Barnetts detail lead me to visualize much of the action and drama as it unfolded in this frightening "what if it happened" story. Although the story centers around a terrorist plot, the characters are developed in such a way to lead to a great sequeal. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good timely thriller.
Rating: Summary: People and Power Review: I literally could not put this book down. The characters were developed such that you either cared about them or hated them. It was frightening to me, although not surprising, to read about what can happen with power in the wrong hands. I once lived in Charleston and could visualize the places, felt like I was there again. I highly recommend this book.
Rating: Summary: Five Stars for "A Single Star" Review: I wish the premises of this insightful novel weren't so chillingly plausible. South Carolina's governor actually confronted the first parts of this deadly scenario in 2002, and the fictional events portrayed in Barnett's book could, indeed, happen just the way he plays them out. Nuclear terrorists don't have to bring the nuclear material into this country (as they did in John Copeland's recent novel, "Retribution"). We have plenty right here to attract the extremist lunatics who infest the 21st century. Like Grisham, Barnett knows his subject intimately and writes with understated intensity. Five stars for "A Single Star."
Rating: Summary: Stan's Cousin Speaks Review: My mother, (Stan's aunt), insisted that I read A Single Star. Knowing Stan as a lover of all things South Carolinian, I presumed " A Single Star" would be a history of the state, and/or a re-visiting of it's 19th century efforts to rethink the US Constitution. I do remember any number of conversations on the subject of "northern aggression" with the author when we were a bit younger. What a surprise I had in store (Mom usually gives pretty good advice). This book is a page turner. The characters are well developed, the descriptions of place and time extraordinary, and the story line all too haunting. Even if I weren't his cousin I would highly recommend "A Single Star" to all lovers of the modern day thriller. Well done Stan, please continue!
