Rating: Summary: over all good Review: i though that the book wasn't very well edited and could be offensive to some readers because it critisizes the church very much.
Rating: Summary: Oh God...this Time I really need help!!!!!! Review: I had to read this book for school. It's times like that, that make me want to go to a public School!!!!!
Rating: Summary: This book poses no questions and offers no answers Review: I recently met a man at a funeral and we were discussing the uninspiring eulogy for the dearly departed delivered by the minister. I told him how unhappy I was with organized religion -- not God, but the churches and people who represented him. He suggested I read "Joshua". Although it was refreshing to find that someone else shared my opinion of "churches", I did not have the life-changing experience that other readers have had.My criticisms include 1) the book seemed to be written for a young adult reader -- it was too simple. 2) it posed no questions for me -- just affirmed what I already felt. 3) it answered no questions for me. 4) the symbolism was spelt out too clearly -- I wanted to find it on my own. "Joshua" is a nice parable, but hardly worth the time.
Rating: Summary: dull treatment of interesting subject matter, what a yawn Review: The message of the book, I suppose, is that Jesus was a soulful human being who was (and still would be, if he were around) opposed to the petty infighting so prevalent in established religion (particularly Christianity and it's subset Catholicism)... good message, painfully dull story, naive delivery and full of simpleminded presumptions. This is a quick and simplistic fix for people who yearn to find comfort in a Christian belief system, but find their religion (or particular church) dogmatic, or simply full of small-minded and small-souled leaders. This, however, is a subject that has been written about for centuries by much more enlightened thinkers... in an actual literary fashion--something missing entirely from "Joshua." Jesus is simply too interesting a character to be treated in such a dull fashion. Given the other reviews, though, it seems this is just what most people want. If that's what you want, buy the book. If not, check out C.S. Lewis, Robert Heinlien, Herman Hesse, Dostoevsky or get the reading list from your local University's "Philosophy of Religion" reading list. Of course, then you might sully your mind with the fruit from the "tree of knowledge." Dangerous.
Rating: Summary: Uncomfortable at first but life changing. Review: As a questioning conservative catholic i first read this book thinking what a hateful man Girzone must be of his faith. As I have let thestory sink in to my life I think how insightful this man is. This book provokes many feelings but mostly turth. A must read book of all faiths.
Rating: Summary: inspiring and challenging Review: This book changed me. The stuff this book contains just "isn't your fathers religion". Being disillusioned with Christianity from very early on because of its many warring divisions and demoninations, this book unearthed the character of the man so many claim to follow, but so few attempt to immitate. Simply, beautifullly written, it just may illuminate your life as it did mine.
Rating: Summary: A beautiful, inspiring reminder of Christ's love for us! Review: Father Girzone did an excellent job of writing a modern day parable depicting Christ's true message of love. The book is enlightening and enjoyable, and I found peace in reading it. I have recommended it to several of my family members and friends and will continue to do so. I do not understand or agree with some of the negative comments from other reviewers relating to the book as being "anti-Catholic and a "poisonous story." I am a cradle Catholic and found nothing offensive in Father Girzone's portrayal of Joshua.
Rating: Summary: It's about time Review: Glad to see so many positive reviews for a book that can change your life, much like the life of Jesus did. Fr. Girzone tells a simple but courageous story of what it might be like if Jesus Christ walked the earth today. Truely a modern day reflection of the human Jesus Christ. This story embraces religious denominations with a charisma only previously employed 2000 years ago. Encourage all rigid fundamentalist Catholics to read this beautiful story.
Rating: Summary: SO WONDERFULLY INSPIRING Review: IF ONLY ONE COULD LIVE A LIFE LIKE THAT OR EVEN TRY TO...SUCH A BEAUTIFUL BOOK
Rating: Summary: Confusing... Review: Overall i found this book amazing, and pretty good. Especially in the beginning, but by the end of the book, so much was unexplained that it left my confused. It was a very humbling book, and I recomend most reading it!
