Rating: Summary: This is it! Review: The Integral Trees, well what can I say. I read this book quite some time ago and have read it three or four times since then. Compared to other science fiction writers, when it comes to setting Niven will blow your mind. I don't remember the directions right now (east, west, out, down...?)...I guess I should read it again in case I find myself in the Smoke Ring someday! If you enjoy writers who create universes then read this book.
Rating: Summary: Man, that's weird! I just love it. Review: This is just classic. If I could go on vacations inside science fiction books, I'd spend quite a while flying around in one of those weird trees, maybe get in some flying time on a kite. Integral Trees seems just perfect to have an animated movie made out of it, and skydivers probably adore the concept of it. Science wise, though Niven has mathematical formulae which prove the Smoke Ring is possible, how exactly did the Integral Trees come to exist in a plane with no gravity and no solid grounding under which a core could churn up elements to produce life? The only thing such a system as the smoke ring could produce would be loose clouds of light matter upon which there would be no force urging coalescence, so none would happen, and without the Integral trees, you'd have a tough time explaining the oxygen content of the smoke ring. But I really don't give a flying, (tehehe), funk about that. The whole thing is just so intriguing and fun its hard to stop and think about anything but how cool it all is.
Rating: Summary: Ever wish you could fly! Review: Well in Niven's smoke ring you can. Niven creates a world that exists within a ring of smoke created by a large planet, that is breathable and "even tastes fine". This novel is Niven's normal displacement epic, where a group of people have to explore thier world beyond their old boundries to find a new life. The characters in this novel are much like the characters in his other similar novels, and the problems and solutions are not very diffent than what he has come up with in another half dozen of his novels. What makes Niven so facinating, is his simple imagination. I was totally engrosed in his world, the native life, and the socities that exist within it. This novel works much like a theme ride at Disneyland. If you are willing to imagine that you are in the smoke ring this book will take you for a ride that is well worth the effort.
