Rating: Summary: Good book, but tedious and overdown Review: I like this book, but I felt that it didn't really have a main point, it didn;t fit in all that good with the other books in the series, and the character Russou Howell was not portrayed as he should have been. This guy was the friend of Trent and felt the honor and everything else that Trent felt and yet he is a drunk and semi-evil???
Rating: Summary: It was a great book. Review: I loved the book. I think that if there were more 'mech battles it would be better. But I liked the fact that Robert Thurston focused mainly on one or two people instead of many. I liked the battle at the end and how Horse and the other Jade Falcons went in and saved his Trinary and his 'mechs. In all it was a great book.
Rating: Summary: Isn't it possible to give 'zero' stars? Review: I loved the Jade Falcon trilogy. I've read them over and over again. Thurston painted a colorful picture of Clan society, its traditions, its heroes and its darker sides. Where Stackpole described Clan policy in his plot-leading novels, Thurston gave life to the Clanners themselves. Alas, Thurston didn't stop there. Freebirth is the failed attempt to show the reader new aspects of Clan society. GalComs with torn personalities, Solahma warriors that beat the crap out of bloodnamed elite pilots, ridiculous fighting scenes with absolute insane outcomes...and worst of all main characters who behave totally out of the picture while giving only fragments of hints for their motivation. The character of Russou Howell for example is a total desaster. Thurston is unable to give a motivation for that proven warrior's un-clannish behaviour. Yet, all of sudden, in the last chapter, Howell appears to be healed and at peace with himself after he just had suffered a surely humiliating defeat. Sorry, this novel is stacked with illogical conclusions and you could write a scientific thesis about the logical mistakes of this book. Okay, Sentania Buhallin gives this novel a positive touch, but if she really was that skilled, why isn't she CJF Khan or at least a GalCom in a completely combat-oriented society? (Just another one of Thurston's errors). Anyway, I'm just glad I finally got thru that attempt of a novel...:-(
Rating: Summary: Best Battletech Book There Is Review: I loved this book. It explains everything about the clans
Rating: Summary: Actually one's thw lowest I can put it at Review: I rather its -1 star than 1 star. He should pay others to read it .Come on! I rather continue with the story than suddenly divert all my attention to Horse. I expected the next book to continue with Marshal Hasek-Davion's assasination. Thumbs up to Thomas S. Gressman, but Arrrggh! What happens to task force Serpent is definitely more interesting than Russou Howell and his stupid rites and trials to show Horse 'the tenacity of Clan Smoke Jaguars'
Rating: Summary: Hmm, I really didn't see the need for this book? Review: I really have to be honest? Why did FASA comission this book as part of the Twilight series? I can't be more blunt! It dragged and the whole novel took a decent person in the guise of Russou Howell and turned him into a sadist. Sorry, but I would rather have seen another installment by Mrss. Stackpole or Gressman. Let's hope Thurston does better with Falcon Rising.
Rating: Summary: Wished I could give '0' stars Review: I really liked Thurston's Jade Phoenix trilogy which gives us the major and most detailed description of Clan society in the btech universe. But 'Freebirth' is an absolute pain. It's chaotic, it makes no sense, it is full of logical mistakes, it's simply embarassing. You want facts? How's this: 2 LAM's destroying 2 front class clan omnis pilotted by elite clan MW's...go dreamin'. A proven clan officer who goes whack, acting like Jim Carey, and flopping around like Lieutenant Harris in Police Academy? A solahma mechwarrior who's all of sudden competing like Natasha Kerensky herself (SCom Buhallin). Oh, dear...you gotta wonder who's been the freeborn editor of this novel. So if you wanna do yourself a favor: Don't read this book, even if you're a die-hard btech reader. And its story doesnt even play any role in the subsequent novels of the Twilight of the Clans series. Go figure.
Rating: Summary: Pretty pointless, but good all the same. Review: I would have liked the book alot more if It had focused on Task Force Serpent more, however, It was still a good book.
Rating: Summary: thurston's worst Review: I'm sorry to say that this is THurston's worst book yet. Gone are the great Jade Phoenix stories. Marthe Pryde is slipping away from teh things that made her interesting, and my fleeting appreciation for Horse lasted all of three chapters this time.
Rating: Summary: This book my favorite Clan BT book Review: In this book you get more of Horse's background. I like this book because it links Joanne, Horse and rest from Thurston's other books in the Twilight of the Clans series. A must read for Jade Falcon fans.
