Summary: I tell you what
Review: this is a fine book and all. If there is a movie, clint eastwood is cadman. There is no debate about it. Him. Or it shouldnt be made. Ok

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Excellent, "Alien"esque sort of tale:
Review: A couple hundred people from Earth are trying to build a colony on a planet ten light-years from Earth; a certain species from among the native life forms makes the colonizing difficult. Fast paced, nearly always action-filled; well drawn out characters (for this genre); continually fluid, easy to read writing style.

Summary: Predator+Alien x 1,000,000=WOW!
Review: This would make an excellent movie, provided that the producers DON'T screw it up with "composite characters! With Starship Troopers having the most computer graphics ever in a movie, this book MUST be next!

Summary: The Definitive Man against Monster tale
Review: I was so impressed by this book I still mention it in conversations with my friends. It vividly describes the colonization of a new world, and the hardships of the colonists, all well developed characters. It chronicles their battles with the supremely deadly Grendals - the most realistic and dangerous creatures I have yet to read about - leading to their spectacular victory. After reading this book you'll never feel threatened by Aliens or Velociraptors again; if it can't think we can beat it!

Summary: TANJ! I've already read this!
Review: When I see this book on a bookshelf, I think TANJ, I've read this already. It isn't often you find a book you wish you hadn't read so you could experience it the first time all over again. This is one of those books. You'll fall in love with Sylvia in the first four pages. You'll experience the wonder of a new world and the euphoria of the colonists as they realize they are the chosen of the human race. You'll experience their dismay as they slowly come to realize that cryogenic sleep has affected their minds, that they are not as intelligent as before. You'll experience first hand the terror as they realize how alien (and dangerous) their new home is. There are few books which describe a place where you would chose to go (in moments of idle fantasizing) if you could..."Legacy" is one of those books and Avalon is one of those places. I would love to be there to share everything, especially if I get to survive the Grendels. Read this book. P.S. According to co-author Jerry Pournelle, the movie rights to "Legacy" have been purchased by United Artists. Keep your fingers crossed...that they make the movie and that they make it right

Summary: 3rd best book ever.
Review: Comes right after Bendigo Shafter and Musashi. Easily the best sci-fi book I have ever read and I have read many. Join Niven in his novel for colonization of Avalon. This book is so "real" you can visualize your self right there in midst of danger of new invironment

Summary: A bright new twist on a centures old idea? I like it!
Review: How rare it is to see another author take a a book thats been around for hundreds of years, and then make it better. Niven has taken the Beowulf saga, and has advanced it a thousand years in "Legacy of Herot." Easily my favourite Niven book, "Legacy" has all the things you come to expect in a fast paced, well descriptive book that leaves you thirsty for more. You become one of the colonists on Avalon and join the battle with them against the insidious Grendels. If you liked the original "Beowulf" works, or are interested in a good evenings worth of reading (Just *TRY* to put this one down, i dare you), this books for you

Summary: Interesting Twists
Review: Very good read. Niven does a good job of creating an alien world with an alien ecology. The solution of one problem creating a much bigger one was unexpected and refreshing.

Summary: Gripping, and an easy read
Review: Book was very well done. I tend more to the sci-fantasy, but this one grabbed me and held on. I'm going to look for more by these authors. Hard to go wrong on this one, just enough literary and obscure references to keep you thinking in the background, without adding to or taking away from the story.

Summary: A good read
Review: I am just amazed at some of the criticism of this story, and the assumptions of what the authors were trying to say. Maybe they just had an idea of a story that would be fun and captivating to read. If so, they did it! This is one of those books, like many of Niven's, that you begin to read and just can't put it down.

If the authors were trying to make any particular point, it was probably (but I haven't written to them, so I and the rest of the reviewers don't really know) concerning our disregard for nature and its power in our attempts to conquer it. I know of two relatively recent movies concerning the perils of hunting a species to extinction. One, that bad but amusing Star Trek movie with the Save the Whales theme, and Medicine Man. There are quite a few real life examples of the us "modifying" the environment without truly understanding the potential repercussions. The introduction of kudzu to the US comes to mind as an example.

They may not have been trying to make a social statement -- only trying to write a captivating story. And they wrote one. But they also gave a horrific example of rushing to modify the environment without understanding the potential repercussions.
