Rating: Summary: must read for those who came in late Review: if you got into the card game during the hidden emperor you haev to read this book it tells the story of beiden pass one of the largest battles in the l5r world
Rating: Summary: I liked it Review: It is a cool book, if you like the Unicorn, they are my favorite clan, so I enjoyed it more than some might. I haven't read any of the other Clan books, but this seemed to be pretty cool. No glaring problems, but kinda boring at parts.
Rating: Summary: only out of necessity Review: the only reason for anyone to read this book is to continue the series. i would have given it a 1 but it continues the story and gives an interesting look at the Crane leader. and am i the only one who found the use of 'domo aragoto' unbelieveably annoying. everytime i read that line i heard 'Mr. Roboto' behind it. i cant stand it when authors intermix languages in their books and in instances like this where its a commonly known phrase that only serves to show the authors complete lack of knowledge about the language. only read this book to continue the series. if in anyway possible rent it from the library or borrow it from someone, but dont waste the money on this piece of.... literature
Rating: Summary: Rokugani Barbarians? The Unicorn brought back much. Review: The Unicorn clan likes beef, wears leather, and doesn't care much for the intrigues of the imperial court. On top of that, they believe in helping the peasants. The are allied with the Crane, and prove to be true allies. Wherein does the service lie though, to the Emperor or the Empire. This is primarily a tale of a few individuals. It doesn't deal with the overall Health of the empire, but does set up several of the battles that would shape Rokugan and the Rokugani during the Clan Wars at the end of the Hantei Dynasty. This also introduces some of the conflict that would be highlighted in the next book of the Legend of the Five Rings Clan War Scrolls, the Crane. This is a fairly good book, though not great. If you are interested in Rokugan, the world of Legend of the Five Rings, or Feudal Asian style High Fantasy, you would probably enjoy this book, otherwise, you would probably find it an interesting work of fantasy but not particularly enjoyable.
Rating: Summary: The Unicorn Review: The Unicorn is the second in the series of the Legend of the Rings. A set of novels that are based upon the card game with the same title. The novels are recreating the history and story line of the card game. As someone who does not play the card game - I find the stories fascinating and interesting. So the stories should be insightful to anyone who enjoys playing the game. The second book picks up where The Scorpion (Book 1) left off. It is a few years after the the coup and things are not settling back down, in fact life for the people in the novel is increasingly getting more dangerous as undead warriors return to sack towns and destroy everything in their path. The novel brings back many of the players from the first novel and introduces a few more who will become players in the upcoming novels. The book is worth a read if you enjoy a good fantasy book, especially if you enjoy a good Samurai-esque adventure. This is no Shogun - but it is fun, none the less.
Rating: Summary: A GOOD SAMURAI TALE Review: This 2nd book in the fantasy-based series was very well written. Following the 1st book - THE SCORPION, some of the same characters came back to continue their roles in this continuing saga of the far east. This author did a fine job of keeping the storyline in sync with the first with the empress Kachiko plotting and planning the destruction of her enemies. The Lion returns as a disgraced ronin with his flashing katana and honor-bound character ever striving. The new characters were very interesting, of course best of all was the main character Tetsuko the battle maiden. This woman had some past horrors tormenting her and strove the whole way to become a legend in her own right. The lead male characters were well written and I was hoping for the poor battle maiden to finally find some love in her life, but I guess it was not to be. This novel had a little more fantasy-based figures in it than the first one, which is what it needed. Lots of action and adventure which I love. Looking forward to the next installment - The Crane!
Rating: Summary: A good second step Review: This book is a good follow up to the first scroll (The Scorpion). This book drops the main characters from the first one in the beginning and you really don't miss them. We learn of events after the cataclysmic finally in book one. About half way we hear of our book one hero and we see he still is a hero (you know the kind a guy you like no matter what). His dealings with our book 2 heroine are a good part of the story. And she is a character you are pulling for from the start. The intrigue from the first book is thicker here and a bit more heady, you almost know a few of the people whom our heroine gets entaggled with. This books starts slowly and builds to the point that you will not put it down until done, then you will read the last pages again. Allison Lassieur had a tough job to do following the first book in this series and has done a great job.
Rating: Summary: Unicorns do it Right! Review: This book started out ok, and then got better, and towards the end I couldn't put it down. Following the dual story of Tetsuko's breathless life of battle and Tadaji's dreams and palace intrigue was a stark contrast at first, but once the threads between them become clearer, it all fell into place. The whole book is full of brilliant images and characters. The plot's foreshadowing had me guessing and flipping back to re-read and see if I had guessed right. At one point I even read ahead because I couldn't stand the suspense (and I never do that)! Like Jikkyo, "No matter what happens tomorrow, it will be with you always..."
Rating: Summary: Read something else! Dont waste your time! Review: This book was a big disapointment for me, the kid I burrowed it from said it was good, but I could not stand it. The characters dont seem real at all, I'm really into all the Samurai, Middle Age stuff and fantasy books but this one just didn't interest me. The characters don't seem real and their dull. I personnally don't like books that are slow getting of, but these L5R get off to fast, by pg. 100 there ready to hack each others heads off. My advice (consitering I have read them all)is go read something worth your time, like The Wheel of Time, the Runelords, Shannara, or find something else, anything.
Rating: Summary: Not as good as the scorpions. Review: This book was an okay read, but not a riviting one like the first book. Some of the characters were interesting, but the pace of the book seemed a little rushed to me. Like she needed to get to the next part as quickly as possible without going into deapth. There were some interesting things that I really wanted to learn more about at the end of the first book and the unicorn book just jumped ahead and didnt go into any of them at all. Which I found disappointing. For me the most annoying thing was the odd japanese word usage. I assumed that the spoken language was not english even though it is printed as english, that being the case to see a sentence like " Sumimasen. I am disturbing you." instead of just " Excuse me. I am disturbing you." Struck me as a pointless and silly thing to have done. It happens quite alot throughout the book. However it is still a good read and some of the characters make it worth the effort. If you like the series then read it. I will be reading the 3rd.
