Summary: Bravo Rene !
Review: I lived and worked in Strasbourg for three years. It was during that time that a friend gave me a collection of Rene Barjavel's stories (in french) for my birthday, and "La Nuit des Temps" is one of the many incredible novels in that collection that really captured my fancy. I was amazed that he is not well known in the US. I am ecstatic to now discover an English translation for my husband, though saddened that these are largely out of print. I am glad to hear, also, that so many readers here enjoyed this novel. Having read several of Barjavel's stories and some of his letters, one of the most enduring qualities of his work is not that he focuses on the "sci-fi" aspect of his fantastic stories. His stories always focus on the human aspect and are classified as science-fiction because the events he recounts happen in fantastic times under extraordinary circumstances. Yet, his focus on relationships, emotions, hopes and fears are what makes his stories unforgettable. I hope all his novels will be translated and that collections of his work will be published and made available in the US. During his lifetime, Barjavel believed that the novel in its classic form is dead, and that the future of novels lie in Science Fiction. If we have more writers as insightful and masterful at storytelling as Barjavel, I'd say he was right.
A tout les francophones qui adore Barjavel -- qu'on continue a faire connaissance a tout le monde de ses romans fantastiques, emouvants et innoubliables.

Summary: The Ice People
Review: I prefer the French Title. This book has haunted me since I first read it in 6th Grade, back in 1975. I love the intense romance, the sci-fi/neolithic fantasy. As soon as I find a good copy again, I'm passing it on to my daughter, another avid reader. I know she will love it like me. Before I discovered the internet, I had given up hope of finding a copy again.....Anyone out there building an impenetrable golden shelter for the next Nuclear War?!!! Need a volunteer. Enjoy reading this thriller. Rene, if you're still around, Je vous en boir avec vous, a'Paris. Fete le livre, "La Nuit des Temps" ****Enjoyable****

Summary: The best book I ever read!!!
Review: I read that book some years ago...I read it in Spanish (Nuit des Temps), so when I was looking for an English version, it was very difficult...Who can belive the name that it has in English? After reading some review I understood The Ice People, must be the book I loved. It was great to find people thinking the same about it.
Now I will tell my best friend to buy so she can read in English. (Of course, I will ask her to let me read it again)
THE BEST FICTION BOOK!!!

Summary: One for memory
Review: I read this book years ago and thought about it today for some reason as I do from time to time. It's message and imagery stay somewhere in my memory. Other readers obviously feel the same about it. Finding a copy of it is hard. I would also like to find it again.

Summary: After 25 years, I found it again!
Review: I reviewed this great book in 97. For all of you who would like to find a copy, look to your used book dealers. There is a chain in Texas, "Half-Priced Books" that only takes in used books from the public. I found my copy there and now my 13 year old daughter had the pleasure of reading this book.

Summary: Unforgetable
Review: I was fourteen when I read this book....and waited 28 years to read it again, when my wife found a copy in a used bookshop. It's as haunting and beautiful as I remembered it to be.

Summary: Ah ! Quel bonheur à l'état pur !
Review: I'm french and I'm just proud of Barjavel for what he did in SF...This novel is one of its best, but can we say that, all his novels are amazing ! But it's not my favorite one...there is another...may be unknown in US or wherever : in france, it's : 'La faim du tigre'. It's a very serious book, a bit philosophical but so true ! So easy to understand because so well-writen ! (sentences like : 'Before the beginning of Time, there was no Before'...) You're gonna laugh but in a way, it changed my life point of view...it's the only book that ever did me that...well, try to find it, may be it'll do the same thing to you...

Summary: probably the best book of all times
Review: I'm french, and read "La nuit des temps" 10 years ago. I was looking for it for my girlfriend ( she's english), and was so pleased to read all the reviews, that i nearly cried. I could'nt imagine that other people love this book as much as i do... I read it probably more than 10 times since i've bought it.( A very nice hard packed one...)and i feel really happy to know other people share this with me... This should be an obligatory book at school, it is so true, so deep... One advise: keep your and never stop reading and reading it again and again...you'll always be more and more enchanted.

Summary: The Magic of Barjavel
Review: I've read this book more than six years ago, yet I can still remember the way it made me feel. Its story of loss and love as well as the idea of a lost world enchanted me at the time, and until today I believe that "La Nuit des Temps" is one of the best science fiction books I have ever read.

Like some other people on this page I think that "The Icepeople" would make a great movie. Anyway, if you get a chance to read this amazing book, definitely don't miss out on it.

Summary: I will *NEVER* forget this book.....
Review: I, too, had read a long, long time ago, but one that has never ever escaped my memory. For years I have tried to find a copy of this book, hoping to once again lose myself in the incredible fantasy and love story that is 'The Ice People', but without success.

I now have a daughter of 11 years of age, who I would love to be able to give this book to her as a present, and to hopefully start her out on a long and fulling lifetime of quality Science Fiction adventures.

They don't get much better.
