Rating: Summary: The origin of man. Review: This story spun by James Hogan draws you in and doesn't let go. Don't start this book unless you have a lot of time on your hands, you will not want to put it down. The plausible scenerio laid forth as to the origin of the human race keeps you guessing up until the end, it's one of my favorite Sci-Fi books. I have read it several times and probably will read it several more, don't pass this one up!
Rating: Summary: Thought Provoking Review: This volume presents the Giants trilogy which consists of "Inherit the Stars," "The Gentle Giants of Ganymede," and "Giants' Star." All three are well written. They are written from a scientist's point of view. The emphasis is on creating theories, and the proces in which theories are developed. This is hard science fiction, so action fans may be disappointed because there isn't much action until the end of the third novel. The first and second novels are resolved by discovering a truth unrealized before.
The first novel begins with the discovery of a human corpse on the moon which at first doesn't seem so unusual because there are lots of humans on the moon. But the odd points start adding up. First, no one is missing on the moon. Second, the suit doesn't match any of those used by the governments of Earth. On opening the suit, they find the body has been mummified, and when they date it, they discover that the body is 50,000 years old! Everything that humans had believed about their origin is put into doubt. Will they be able to unravel the mystery of this early visitor to the moon?
Rating: Summary: Inherit... is the most awe inspiring book I've ever read. Review: Using scientific fact and ingenius imagination, Hogan creates a simply awesome, idea driven novel. In the end, Hogan offers unique, insightful answers to many mysteries of space and human existence. The scope of Inherit the Stars is boundless, and will have you wishing it never ends. It is the most enlightening scientific work since The Origin of Species.(take that with a grain of salt, of course)
Rating: Summary: One good idea and three novels of repetition Review: _Inherit the Stars_ is one of the more unique S/F novels, if only in the sense that it shows an insider's view as to how the scientific and research communities operate in the present. Hogan's concept of how this community would react to the discovery of an alien artifact is insightful and well-conceived. His knowledge of scientific technique is considerably more advanced than many of his peers ... for whatever that's worth. Unfortunately, the novel becomes repetitive after a hundred pages, the characters are obsolete and politically incorrect, and the flood of epiphanies gets cheesy fast. The last two books are mildly interesting but lack in dramatic tension. I would recommend this book but there are many others worthier of your time.
