I found that the story was a little one sided and didn't have the same feel that the other books in this mini series had of ther being an audience that whanted to hear a good story over a glass of spirits and in good company.

Peter David does it again, showing humor as well as sensitivity in the story of Calhoun's tragedy on the Grissom. It was very believable and the sex content WAS toned down(Not that I mind a little in the stories now and then). It was a good move to do so because of the horrible thing that happened to the captain and the anguish it put Calhoun through. It makes Calhoun's character in the other stories all the more stronger for this "trial-by-fire".It also shows, that despite the Prime Directive, sometimes a great person can only take enough before crumbling. The Grissom captain's deterioration calls to mind Commodore Decker's mental collapse in TOS. And putting the Grissom's XO, who was once romantically involved with Calhoun, on the same ship with Calhoun's ex-fiance? As Sam on Quantum Leap used to say, "Oh, boy."
