Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: One thing I can rely on. Review: Peter David delivering the goods. Breathless pace, strong characterizations, unpredictable plot are all I require for my needs. I am never bored by Mr. David's efforts and this book was certainly no exception.
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: Another Great Chapter in the NF universe Review: Peter David does it again and brings another exciting chapter to the New Frontier Mythos. Now that the TV Series for TOS and DS9 are over. I get my Star Trek fix for David. In "Once Burned", Mackenzie Calhoun tells the fateful story of the USS Grissom that has only been hinted at in the regular series. Peter David uses the "Captain's Table" concept to the fullest by telling a story in the past thus allowing new readers to jump on board, but also adding another dimension to the Captain for us older readers. A+
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: Wahoo! Total Actionfest. Review: Peter David gets to do what we all love to do: color outside the lines, AND get full approval from The Powers That Be to do so. While Mr. David can be a big pompous windbag in person, he sure knows how to pen a wonderfully satisfying story. When I read a Star Trek novel, I wanna be entertained, and Peter David's stories entertain me "Rakash." Oh, sorry. To discover what "Rakash" means, you gotta read the book. Anyway, because of David's outstanding ability to write the words, I'll forgive him his "windbag-ness" every single time. For those of you following the New Frontier adventures of Captain Mackenzie Calhoun and the intrepid but rather whacko crew of the Excalibur, you will certainly remember the many references to the incident aboard the U.S.S. Grissom. Well, this here little paperback describes that incident in full detail. And believe me, it ain't for the faint of heart. Once again, the Captain's Table bar sets the stage for Star Trek storytelling, and Peter David is one of Trek's finest tellers. Action, adventure, heartache, revenge, death, destruction, humor, sex, and scandal - this book has it all and then some.
Rating: ![4 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-4-0.gif) Summary: Another strong effort by Star Trek's best author Review: Peter David is one of those rare discoveries--ie an author that can turn an often mediocre series of novels (like Star Trek can be, let's be honest) into something original and entertaining. The addition of the New Frontier series has been a plus. David's characterizations of all the main characters in that series have kept my interest over a total of 6 novels. Now to get the chance to learn a little about Calhoun's past is quite exciting, and David does not disappoint. Strong plot work, consistent humor, gently bittersweet and sometimes funny handling of sexual situations, and consistently readable prose make this my favorite of the Captain's Table series yet. My only disappointment is that we probably won't get to have any other tales with the members of the Grissom's crew. I found that I was becoming fond of them as well, and wish that they could re-appear somewhere else. I don't in general like to give 5 stars to a book that isn't a classic. And once more, let's be honesst--this is not a tale that will last for all time. But the 4 stars I give it are more than well earned. Thoroughly enchanting and exciting read. Get it!
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: "FANTASTIC!!!" Review: Peter David just keeps getting better and better! Talk about not being able to put a book down! If you have read any other books in the "New Frontier" Star Trek line, you already know these books are some of the best examples of Star Trek lierature. This one is even better! If you have not yet had an opportunty to read any of these, this is a fine place to hop on. Peter David is a master craftsman who's tales are vivid and exciting. At the end of each chapter he leaves you with a little zinger that makes it very hard to not read just one more. How I would love to see his Trek tales come to life on the screen, big or small, -even animated. Get it, read it, love it! I sure hope he writes many more of these!
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: Once Burned... Twice Read! Review: The first chapter had me a bit worried. It moved a bit too slow for me (as do many of Peter David's first chapters). But true to form, it picked up from there and ZOOOOOM we were off. GREAT story. GREAT action. You feel the uncertainties and worries as Calhoun tries to deal with the much loved captain of the Grissom. I nearly cried at the end when you discover who he is telling the story to! Definately a MUST READ for any Calhoun fans!

Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: Once Read Twice Meaning Review: There is much to learn from this story from the Capitain's Table:
Mackenzie Calhoun steps inside and tells a tale of his own merits.
The storytelling tells much of his perceptions of being
in the civilizated federation, dwelving through regulations
in a oblique way not long after graduating in the academy,
not long after being the rebellious leader
that set free a planet from oppression.
"Once Burned" comes from the expression once burned twice shy,
that points that failures turns active persons into passive
safety net seekers that shy away from the perils of exploring
new forms of life, for the story Calhoun chooses to chest out,
is of his first experience as first officer of the Grissom.
He investigates the incident, that is many times mentioned
in other stories over and over, coming to terms with himself.
For the reader is a journey through the thin line that sometimes blurrs between being a gallant knight full of chivalry and being a sauvage warrior.
Calhoun ends with a mature sense of blending that those
qualities within himself must balance... or not.
