Summary: It has no end, but I loved it.
Review: "Ports of Call" is an enchanting, lovely, scary and sad Vance book, as good as any. It clearly has no end. This is a pity, but it may well be that the author is ill or tired. Nobody can finish this story but him. I hope he will. There are not so many people who brought more light and poetic justice into my life. Jack Vance is one of the few. -- AF

Summary: A masterly demonstration of Vance at his very best.
Review: Anyone who has read Vance will find their appetite whetted from the first page - and their hope raised. Could this be an even better book from the master, rather than just something from the fringe of an illustrious career? Yes, it is as good as his very best, joining Emphyrio, the Blue World, Wyst, the Cugel and Lyonnesse books. A treat. Long may he write!

Summary: Disappointment...
Review: As any devoted Jack Vance fan knows, Vance's level of focus varies wildly from book to book- from the tightly plotted and well thought out (Lyonesse, The Dying Earth) to gotta-pay-the-bills one-draft hackiness (the Alastor Cluster series).

I guess he had to pay some bills with this one.

Summary: An Homage to P.G. Wodehouse
Review: As in Space Opera (my least favorite Vance book), Jack is playing in "Wodehousian Space," and I want to see this ambition work, for the sake of both these wonderful literary stylists. I think with a sequel it still can. PoC is not a long book. It's obviously just part of the real book. But the thing is tricky to do. Let's hope Jack has the insight and encouragement to bring it off.

Summary: drifting, entertaining, but not exciting
Review: Being a vivid fan of the master, I eagerly awaited his latest output. I'm not disappointed, because it is a neat story with beautiful descriptions and it kind of floats. But it is his first story ever without a climax and I wonder whether this might be his last book and in a way his good-bye.

Summary: A disappointment
Review: For an author who wrote such a large amount of splendid books, this is rather poor. No magic or even a plot, but too many clichés in the many anecdotes about strange places and strange peoples. Even the 'hero' is rather colourless. It has its moments, but for the rest it is written without much inspiration. A pity.

Summary: Mellowest book ever from Vance.
Review: Having read every book Vance has ever penned, I found this one refreshing in that it didn't follow the classic format -- you know: introduction, dilemna, struggle, resolution and epilogue. This was more like a floating adventure with a new thing to see around every corner. Not much in the way of bad guys, but I found the good guys appealing and obvious amalgams of past Vancian characters. You just know this one has a sequel coming!

Summary: Not Jack Vance's best
Review: I agree with those who say that this is not Jack Vance's best work. But my main concern here is the Booklist Review. Did they even read the book? The review is factually incorrect. Myron was the captain of his aunt's ship before she fired him, but not the captain of the Glicca.
