Rating: Summary: A fun adventure, but no classic Review: Star Risk, Ltd. reminds me of a print version of the excellent anime series Cowboy Bebop - only not as cool. From the beginning the reader should abandon all thoughts of a hard science fiction story and get ready for something more akin to a wild west tale set in the Star Wars universe. This is science fantasy, but that's not to say it fails to entertain. There are more than a few chuckles and memorable scenes in this book, and it would be great for passing the time on a plane flight or long road trip. Pick up Star Risk, Ltd. if you don't want to *think* too hard about your sci-fi reading for once.
Rating: Summary: Far from his best Review: The book felt contrived, as if he needed some money and rushed it out.
Rating: Summary: I liked it. Review: This book is like the perfect airplane reading. I don't mean that in a bad way, either. It's lighthearted, not too dense -- just pure escapist sci-fi.
One big annoyance, though, was the use of paragraphs in dialogue. Stuff that could've been one big chunk of text was split up into three or four paragraphs, each one or two sentences, and since each paragraph begins with quotes it was sometimes hard to tell who was speaking.
Rating: Summary: Fast Paced; Small Gaps Review: This is a great 'quick' read book. It flows well and moves fast to keep you reading from start to finish. The characters/heroes are very likable; especially M'chel Riss. Unfortunately the only character that seemed really well developed in the story was M'chel; several of the other characters are left lacking detail. The book is very fast paced as I have said, but in doing this often leaves little gaps in the story. The end wraps up rather abruptly, and without complete conclusion; almost as if the author was bored with it, or just decided it was time to finish. The biggest annoyance was the slang used, words that had no meaning to me, the reader; and many of them were never given any explanation. Overall, worth the read; but check it out from the library or buy it used.
Rating: Summary: don't waste your money on this book Review: This is an awful written book. Only dialog and no whatsoever description of the universe. If you are into Spaceopera i will suggest something either from Ian Banks or Peter F Hamilton!
Rating: Summary: Entertaining and an easy read Review: This is my first time reading a Chris Bunch novel and I think I was expecting it to be more along the lines of the standard sci-fi military novel. Instead what I took away from it was more light-hearted humorous action. The dialog is typical of when military/ex-military friends get together and rag on each other and to be honest I wish there was more of that.Imagine a typical action movie with the bad one-liners that seem to go with those along with those and add some sexual banter than never seems to come to fruition. Those type of movies aren't the most intellectually stimulating and they'll never get drama of the year but they are entertaining none the less. Same here. So throw some music on (I suggest old Rolling Stones tunes for this one) and curl up and enjoy . . . it'll be over before you know it, so you might as well go pick up the rest of the series. I'm starting on book 2 in a moment myself. (...)
