Rating: Summary: For action/adventure lovers of sf Review: The explorers Erx and Berx are nearing an isolated planet on the fringe of known space when their ship starts to act crazy and looks set to detonate. They say their final good-byes, but before anything catastrophic happens, a man flying a spaceship of unknown design rescues them. The duo meet Hawk Hunter, an individual who has no idea who he is, how he landed on the deserted planet, or how created one of the fastest spaceships in the year 7200.Erx and Berx persuade Hunter to enter the Earth Race, an annual spectacular that awards the winning team with incredible wealth. Hawk agrees because recognition will enable him to learn his identity. He easily wins the race and obtains a clue towards finding out his identity. This is the first book in a new series by the author of the Wingman and the Chopper Ops novels and it appears to be a sure hit for action adventure readers. The endearing hero marches at his own pace yet remains a team player. Hunter's interactions with Erx, Berx, and others come across as genuine and the choices he makes fit his personality. In STAR HAWK, Mack Maloney has created a champion of justice that will prove to have wide appeal. Harriet Klausner
Rating: Summary: Wingman #17 Review: This continues the adventures of again-mindwiped post-apocalyptic fighter jock Hawk Hunter, this time plunking him on some Godforsaken rock in the far reaches of the Milky Way Galaxy in 7200 AD. Some of the things mentioned about Hawk's mysterious past require having read several books from the "Wingman" series, like the photo he has on him when he's initially found, and some of the sci-fi stuff that's described sounds like it's from old 1950s Buck Rogers serials, but it ultimately comes off as a shorter, far-future revision of "Wingman #14: The Sky Ghost" in that Hawk is desperately trying to figure out who he really is and where he really comes from while wowing everybody he comes across with his flying skills. The best part if the description of the Earth Race that featured on the cover, and how Hawk enters it flying what's ultimately an F-16C Fighting Falcon hand-built out of salvaged starship components.
