Summary: Good book but out of date
Review: If you ever wanted to get into the world of Speculative Fiction writing (aka Science Fiction and Fantasy) but had no idea how to proceed then this is the book for you. This book contains all the basic information needed from how to approach an editor or agent to formatting your work. This book changed me from a hopeful dreamer who had no idea how to publish and pointed me in the right direction. The only thing bad about this book is that the information about the editors and publishing people and places are out of date, but with the other information you should be able to find this information out for yourself.

Summary: A Comprehendable Guide to Fantasy/Sci-Fi Writing
Review: Most Sourcebooks I've seen are simply lists of information with tiny descriptions after each item. This book not only has that, but it also includes many articles by known authors on some of the critical details of selling manuscripts. I definently recommend this to anyone who'd like a taste of how to get your work published.

Summary: A good book but not up to date
Review: The best part about this book are the stories of how beginning writers broke into the fantasy and sci fi genres. There's even a large section about J.V. Jones' THE BAKER'S BOY novel and it's path through the maze of becoming a marketable novel.

Several articles on fantasy writing, including one by Joel Rosenberg.

Lots of info on various markets, including online resources.

Only drawback is that it's not up to date but it's a good source. It's only 5 years old so you can look at the companies that take fantasy, contact them for current info and send it out. Not too many books just for fantasy and sci fi so high marks.

Recommend.

Summary: A must if you are seeking a career as a SF writer!
Review: This book covers perhaps the most important aspect of writing science fiction: the market itself. It includes manuscript formats cover letters and what to put in them, how to approach an editor, and it lists everything you need to know about the magazines and publishers who are looking for SF. There are also interviews with editors (who discuss what they do and do not like to publish) and with first time writers (who discuss how they broke into the business). There is also advice about writing comic books and writing in shared worlds. Of all the books on writing science fiction, this one's the best.

Summary: Get it used and read the first 60 pages, the rest is old
Review: This book is good but cannot stand alone as a SF writer's resource. The advice from the author is in the first 60 pages, and it is good guidance. The rest of the books is dedicated to potential publishers, success stories, and some resources you may not have known about or thought of. However, being printed several years ago, expect the info to be out of date. Your best bet is to get this book used.

Summary: Great summary! Lots of information in this book.
Review: This is a great book. It covers Primary Short Fiction Markets, Other Short Fiction Markets, Primary Novel Markets, Other Markets, and Agent Listings. Each Market contains what categories they specialize in. Lists on how to contact, when the publication was established, size of circulation, frequency of publication, payment rates are also included.. Even includes pictures of some of the editors. A note of warning: it is three years old and some of the information is out of date. Some markets have been added and some dropped since publication date. It is still a great reference for the writer.

Summary: Great Book. Out of Date.
Review: This is a useful book. It would be an extremely useful book if it were more up to date. It was published in 1996. Given how fast this industry appears to be changing, much of the most useful info (publisher's data, agent data, etc.) is suspect. For instance, there is an imprint discussed in the book which no longer exists. There is a note on the copyright page which reads "Attention Booksellers: This directory is published every two years by F&W Publications. Return deadline for this edition is December 31, 1998." I really wish they had kept that up. There would be a 4th edition by now. That said, it still contains much useful info about the publishing industry in general and the insiders view from editors is great. Writer's Digest puts out good reference books. I would likely not have bought it, however, had I noted the pub. date initially.

Summary: Helps writers enter a new dimension of publishing promise.
Review: Though they write of the fantastic, writers must work within certain realities: they must write well, and they must market professionally. With its solid guidance and 300 market listings (100 new in this edition!) this book will help them do both. The book also includes sections covering science fiction organizations, workshops, online services, conventions, awards and more
