Rating: Summary: I LOVED this book!! Review: I love this series. I am eagerly awaiting the third one. I thought this book was just as good as the prequel, "The Last Dragonlord". In this one, there is big trouble brewing in the eastern land of Jehanglan. A phoenix that is supposed to be released and burned every thousand years has been held captive. It is about a century overdue and getting angry. So powerful an army of truedragons can do nothing against it, the phoenix rages for freedom. A captive truedragon is also held captive beneath a mountain, and one small troupe of tumblers who are really Dragonlords are setting out into the heart of the near-disaster country...
Rating: Summary: Intelligent and interesting dragons Review: I am something of a dragon afficianada. Joanne Bertin has managed to come up with new and wonderful dragons, neither McCaffrey rip-offs nor marauding fire-breathing wyrms to be slain by knights in shining armor. The shape-changing and soul mating dragons captured my imagination and went along to have great adventures. The action moved along much quicker in this book than in the first of the series. I could hardly stop reading once I reached the middle of the book. The plot developed thoughtfully, and with always enough teasers to keep me wondering about how everything was going to be resolved. And what a surprising resolution -- which I'm not going to give away here -- but issues from the first book were tied up, while introducing new potentials for the next book. You can't ask for more. Now I find myself in the unenviable positin of having to wait for the next one. For anyone who likes high adventure and dragons, this book is a must.
Rating: Summary: not disappointed Review: I usually pick up any book that is dragon-related, and I wasn't disappointed in this one. The way Ms. Bertin put this story together made it hard for me to put the book down until the story ended. I can't wait for the next installment!
Rating: Summary: No. Sorry. Review: I could not tell the difference between the names of characters in this book, mostly because Ms. Bertin chose to step outside her field of expertise and write in a pseudo-oriental style, clashing with the sort of traditional Anglo-Saxon one she established in The Last Dragonlord [heavily laced with painfully modern romance novel dialog]. It was excruciating to see this mish mash of cultures. Some people [myself included] love dragons so much that they will buy just about anything with one on the cover [which is how I ended up with this book, and its predecessor.] This, however, is not a good contribution to draconic literature.
Rating: Summary: Not very good Review: Rough book, characters and plot half-written. There are much better books to read.
Rating: Summary: I COULDN'T PUT IT DOWN! Review: Oh, man! This book is even better than the first one! I could not put it down! I even put myself behind in my schoolwork to finish the book! The Lysanyin horses play a bigger role in the book. The story line is rich with twists, treachery, and pure imagination. The only thing I could predict was Shima's role. I figured him out right away. I will tell everyone this... I sat there reading this book and kept wishing that I could jump into the pages and warn Linden and Maurynna and the others about Taren and the trap he was leading them into. I hated putting the book down for meals! I would put it down to go eat and all the while the characters were in my thoughts. I couldn't wait to find out if everything would be okay and that everyone survived in the end.
Rating: Summary: A Magnificent Novel and a Breathtaking Sequel! Review: Joanne Bertin wrote "The Last Dragonlord," which is my favorite book, I literally could not put it down! I was beyond belief happy to find out she was writing a sequel. "Dragon and Phoenix" is the best sequel novel I have ever read, it maintained the characters you loved from the first novel and made them even more intriging and captivating to read about. The descripitions of the characters and places are some of the best I've read. The plot was completely unexpected and other-worldly great. Joanne Bertin has a mystifing talent that I do not believe she has fully tapped into yet... but hopefully she has may more novels to surprise and captivate us with. Joanne Bertin is one of the best writers out there and is quickly becoming my favortie author.
Rating: Summary: Yuppers! Review: Joanne! You have done it yet again! Your first novel, The Last Dragonlord, had me captivated from the first page to the last and now with this novel... well they say you can never improve on perfection, you have proven them wrong. And no people, not just saying this because I'm in the novel. I am harsh at times, and have read over 100 dragon related books thus far and even knowing some of the authors, I will give a bad review if it deserves it (and lost friends doing this). Dragon and Phoenix is one of the best! If you are a dragon fan, this book is a MUST read! Worth every cent :-)
Rating: Summary: Captivating! Review: This was one of the most interesting books i've read in a long time. It has an interesting plot and charecters that you can relate to. I will confess though, there are times that you are really just waiting for something to happen, and the switching from one character to another could get very annoying during scenes where there is danger to a character, or when some interesting smaller plot is just forming, but all in all, this is a fascinating book that will keep you captivated for hours on end. I'm on the edge of my seating waiting for the next book in the series to come out, Bard's Oath.
Rating: Summary: loved it, loved it, loved it! Review: A beautiful sequel. Miss Bertin has done it again! She does a wonderful job of adding to the story of the weredragons, without repeating herself as I've seen many authors do. *Dragon and Phoenix* is a fast-paced,compelling read, with some wonderful unexpected twists. With a truedragon in chains and a phoenix trapped for its awesome power, you can't put this book down until you've turned the last page. I look forward to the sequel!
