Rating: Summary: Lives up to Edding's reputation! Review: This Book is Great!....While not what I expected. I have been reading Edding's stories for years now and this one is one of the best. When I first picked up this book I believed that it was a fantasy book such as the Belgariad. While I was wrong about that i wasn't disappointed. With his ususal finesse, Eddings successfull tells another tale. The characters where amazingly interesting. I couldn't put the book down until I finished it. A must read for any Eddings fan!
Rating: Summary: A fascinating discourse on human society Review: This book is without a doubt something that will inspire you to think more about those people dependent on society to make themselves survive.David Eddings creates to great polar opposites in Raphael, a golden boy who tries to do well by others, and Damon, a man set on the destruction of him. Raphael is a strong character, whose desire to succeed on his own after a horrible, debilitating accident is wonderful. He simply refuses to become a statistic to the social workers that come to help him. Damon Flood is a very subtly twisted man. He reminds me of Steven King's Flagg persona...except he is even more subtle than Flagg ever was, and his reasons weren't for evil, but for personal reasons. This book, to me, is really David Eddings writing a very Steven King like novel. If you like Steven King, you should like this work. And if you like David Eddings, and don't have to have your reading be fantasy, this novel will be enjoyable. It made me think about human existance, and I liked that. It is out of print, it says. If you see it in a library, enjoy.
Rating: Summary: The truth of reality... Review: This book, which none will dispute, to be outside of Eddings's usual endeavors is a hit nonetheless. Set in today's society it shows us the grim reality of the social support program and the curse of the "women who don't know how to type"(not meant as a sexist remark). With some lacings of satire where appropriate and drenched in the harsh reality that many are forced to live with. It provides a wakeup call to main stream society about the problems beyond the begger on the street or the coupon guy at the grocery digging in the basket of dented cans and expired goods. If this book dosen't open your heart then the only way would be to go and live their(the loosers) life. A must read!
Rating: Summary: Unexpected Delight Review: When I got the book I was expecting an Eddings' fantasy, especially with its cover picture, but when I read it I found it not a fantasy at all. The entire book I expected it to suddenly be a fantasy because it hinted at angelic myths throughout. I was thoroughly captivated by this book. Even though I expected an all out fantasy I discovered Eddings' ability to do a novel of something totally different from his normal characters and genre. I found it in the Sci-fi fantasy section, but it does not really belong there. It is defineately dark and blantantly criticises the social welfare system, but a lot is true and eye opening. This is a great book to read, and really shows Eddings in a different light then his traditional fantasy that I also love.
