Rating: Summary: The Giver Review: This fantasy book by Lois Lowry was one of the best book I've ever read. The book takes place in a weird world totally parallel to ours. In that world, there is no hate violence or wrong-doing and nothing extraordinary happens. The Giver gives Jonas the memories and feelings, good and bad, from our world, that don't exist in his world.

Rating: Summary: Society of Manufactured Perfection *sundancer* Review: Here there is no ugliness. There is no violence. There is no hatred. But can the people of this utopian society then understand beauty, peace, and love? When Jonas comes of age, he is appointed to recieve the burden of all the memories of the Community. He alone is to understand for all of them , so they may live life freely, in ignorance. He alone is to be truly human, to suffer, but he is also to love. As he lives the world through its memories, he sets himself apart from the rest in the Community. It is as though he has vision while they are blind. He sees their efficient acts of cruelty, their legal murder, their naive helplessness. They are under perfect control, they are sheltered, they are channeled and programmed. They think that they are happy without knowing happiness in its true form. Children play war without understanding death or anger or cruelty. Women and men apply for a spouse and are matched via the government, assigned to a house and allowed one male and one female child for their family unit, but they do not have the intellectual capacity to love. Suddenly he is compelled to open their eyes to the sunlight, their ears to music... One musical piece that truly fits this book is Chopin's Mazurka in A minor, Op.67, No.4.
Rating: Summary: Disturbing, but incredible Review: I think that any one who is old enough to really "get" this book should enjoy it. I loved everything in the book except the ending, which is the most controversial part of the read, and even that is pretty good. A nice "Write your own ending" and "What-If" book, and it also makes you think. Check it out.
Rating: Summary: The Giver Review: The Giver is a favorite of mine. I know that it doesn't appeal to everyone. I am not a Science Fiction reader. This book is more than Science Fiction. I am an elementary school teacher and have used this book in my classroom for years. I have colleagues that frowned about the book because they think that is suggest certain things that children shouldn't think about. A book can suggest whatever the reader wants to read into it. I personally have found it to be a excellent book to open up discussions about important issues. I try to read it around the time for black history month. It is excellent to discuss how people different from ourselves are treated my us. We discuss self-centeredness and how we want everything to be like us or our way. Critical thinking is a wonderful skill to teach using this book. Some have criticized the ending. I love the open ending that is left for the reader to decide what happens. Life is open for us to determine our ending based on the way that the issues in this book are addressed in our own lifes. The book can be used as lightly or as deep as one would like. Regardless it will leave you thinking. This is one book that my students and parents talk about for years.
Rating: Summary: The Giver, a very fine book! Review: My name is Eric and I'm in the 8th grade. We just completed reading The Giver. I found the story very interesting. Though it was confusing at times, as an active reader (with the help of my teacher)I was able to understand some things that were very confusing. Lois Lowry did an exelent job on symbolism. I also like the way that she kept you optomistic. Though you could predict what was going to happen, there would always be a turn in the story that was totally un expected. I urge you to buy this book and read it for yourself. This is one book that blows away all of the others!
Rating: Summary: VOLCOMGURL2005@AOL.COM {NIKKI HUGHES Review: I THOUGHT THIS BOOK WAS FEELED WITH ADVENTURE JUST LIKE MODERN SOCIETY.IT STARTS WITH A BOY NAMED JONAS HE GET ASSIGNED A JOB IN HIS COLOR-LESS COMMUNITY AND HE BECAMES ONE OF THE ONLY HONORED PEOPLE . HE WAS THE RECIVER OF MEMORY. HE GETS TRANSMITED THE MEMORIES OF THE PAST THAT THE COMMUNITY CANT BARE TO SEE. THE COMMUNITY DOESNT KNOW OF THE PAST THEY DONT SEE COLOR AND THEY DONT HEAR MUSIC AND THEY GET ASSIGNED TO FAMILY UNITS.THE PARENTS DONT GET TO HAVE THEIR OWN CHILDREN THEY TAKE PILLS TO FIGHT THE ERGES. YOU GET A MOM A DAD AND 1 BOY AND 1 GIRL. WHEN YOUR TWELVE YOU GET ASSIGNED TO A JOB JUST LIKE JONAS. JONAS FINDS OUT THE HIS FATHER; A NURTURER KILLS BABYS BY STICKING A NEEDLE IN THEIR FOREHEAD. HE ALSO KILLS PEOPLE WHO GET REALEASED.AT THE END JONAS TAKES A NEWCHILD;GABRIEL TO ELSEWHERE SO THAT THE PEOPLE IN THE COMMUNITY CAN ACTUALLY FEEL PAIN AND LOVE . SO JONAS TAKES GABE TO ELSEWHERE SO HE WONT BE KILLED;REALEASED.THE PART I HATE IS WHEN AT THE END YOU REALLY DONT KNOW IF JONAS AND GABE DIED ON THE WAY DOWN THE HILL ON THE SLED AND THE MUSIC THEY HEARD WAS FROM HEAVEN. OR REALLY HE HEARD MUSIC AND SAW A HOUSE.
Rating: Summary: A great book Review: Lowry did a wonderful job at both creating a fantastic story while having a rarely thought about theme about how controlled and standardized should everyone life's be. Of course their should be some control, but how much? This story definately shows that too much is a bad thing. With shocking revelations, numerous unexpected events, you can't put this book down. It has mostly realistic events and concepts, and excellent descriptions so it seems like the story could possibly happen in the future, which i hope never does. You must read this book!
Rating: Summary: The Giver Review: The Giver by Lois Lowry was a great science fiction novel wonderfully written. The language and symbolizim that was used made the book even more compelling, and the way she contradicted herself in some instances. The book also made you think if even some of the thing s she discribed in her book were even feasible. The ending made the you think about lots of things and what they ment, the clifhanger at the end left a lot of things unclear but my general opinion was I loved it. The Giver was a book that could grab your interests and leave you guessing I think that everybody should read this book .
Rating: Summary: The Giver Review Review: “Memories are forever” - quoted directly from the book. That is one or the more positive of the themes contained in this book, but in addition, the author was able to through a few subtle hints as to what she thinks of the general public’s mentality. Unfortunately, the latter was negatively derived, hinting that she believes that the average follower would take away the personal edge of life in order to substitute a simpler, more stable life. While I don’t believe enough unfeeling people would ever have enough say in order to overcome the task of “Sameness,” I follow her ideas in that it isn’t scrupulous. While this book caught itself in a few contradictions, it still has enough meaning in order to make one think.
