Rating: Summary: "Enter the community" Review: We read the book in school and I think it was a good choice of the teacher. It's not the best book I've ever read but if you like the theme you should read it. There are some boring passages but there are also some exciting ones. All in all the book is interesting for people who like books about such unrealistic themes. I would have expected another ending but it's a good choice by the author to make you think about it and imagine what happens to Jonas and the boy.
Rating: Summary: interesting Review: We like the book "The Giver" by Lois Lowry very much because it's similar to "our world". We could imagine that there will be such a world like the book explains. The book is easy to read and to understand. We thought a lot about it and we are a little bit disappointed because of the questions we had while reading the book. It seems to us that the ending is too short and sudden.
Rating: Summary: Amazing book Review: In my opinion the story of the book was very nice to read because I, as a non-native speaker, could read it very easily. It isn't written in a very complicated way so it could be perfectly used for our Enlgish lessons. An interesting and exciting science-fiction story about a totaliterian system which a young boy tries to chance. It tells us about a journey through a world that is completely different to ours.
Rating: Summary: A Utopian Society Review: The Giver, written by Lois Lowry, takes the reader into a different world, very different then what we currently see ourselves in today. Actually, imagine our world without any surprises or different circumstances. A life lived the same way, everday. Instead of picking what you want to be in life, the task is given to you. Jonas, the main character, lives this utopian lifestyle at the age of eleven when the book starts out. At the age of twelve he recieves his assignment or job. Except he recieves a very rare and honorable position. Scared and confused, he recieves his "training" for his new "selected" occupation and takes on a new lifestyle that others in his community are lacking. A real world!I wasn't able to read this book in school because of the english courses I was taking. Thankfully I went back and read these books in my free time, for fun. The Giver is a great and very different read. I highly recommend it.
Rating: Summary: The new Receiver Review: When I first began to read "The Giver," I thought it was going to be a good book, but I had no clue what a great book Lois Lowry had in store! This book has sad parts, surprising parts, and happy parts. I loved the main character, he had so much determination, courage, and he is so kind. This is truly a great book! A boy named Jonas lives in a 'perfect' community. Everyone has their own family unit. And they're all assigned their own jobs. When Jonas is about to turn 12 he is chosen to be the new Receiver. He now is in training to receive all the memories from the past. He is being trained by the Giver. The Giver is the only one in the community who holds all the memories of the past, now he must give them to Jonas. All of the new things he's learing from the past, he never knew about, does Jonas really want to be the new Receiver? A lot of my friends have read the Giver and told me it was a great book. And they all told they truth! When I first looked at the cover it got my attention, then when I began to read, I became hooked. Lois Lowry is one of my favorite authors, all of the books I've read that she has written have all had me at the edge of my seat. This is most deffinatly one of my favorite books! A wonderful book by Lois Lowry.
Rating: Summary: Great - for those that want to live in a Perfect World Review: Most people want to live in a perfect world. They never realize that a perfect world would not be fun at all. This books helps everyone realize thatt perfect is boring and monotonous. The same schedule, weather, "birthday" every year - and every day. After reading this book, I realized that I'm happy with the way life is now, always changing and never the same again.
Rating: Summary: Go Go Great Giver Review: The Giver is a book that mentions a lot of issues that are discussed by politicians and leaders everywhere. The book has an interesting perception of the future. It is a world where there is no freedom and very little pain. There is no pleasure and you do not get paid. There is no need for money in this book. You don't get to choose your job or, whom you are married to and almost every thing is decided for you. The main character is Jonas, an eleven-year-old boy, turning twelve. That is the age when you get your job. Jonas gets the job to hold every memory ever since the dawn of time. This is amazingly descriptive and gripping story that leads you through Jonas's life as the Receiver of the Memory. I personally like the book because of its writing style and the way Lois Lowry pictures the future. She also does a great job of describing every little detail in the book. This book is like science fiction and fantasy combined. This book is good. I think you should buy it because it has a lot of interesting details and issues. It also has a lot of problems that we should solve but we don't bother to. It shows the importance and value of life and our feelings. It is sad because there are so many things you cant do or don't know how to do. They are not even allowed to read or know about the past. Everything is the same there is no rain or snow or sunshine. The book has everything that is important and not important. Jonas knows no pain. Then Pow! Wow! Bam! All of a sudden he feels pain. But he also feels goodness and happiness and for the first time ever Love! I think it is kind of sad that there is no love in the community or the world he lives in. Then Jonas decides to run away. Will he succeed and survive or will he die saving a newborn child find out in The Giver?
Rating: Summary: The Greatest Giver Ever!!! Review: The Giver is an amazing book. It's about the life of a boy named Jonas and the society in which he lives. Jonas lives in a world where they choose sameness over risk. Everyone has the same amount of people in their family. Everyone can only see black and white. Everyone follows rules exactly. No one can hear music. No one has individual birthdays, instead everyone is born in the same year and all become "ones" together, then "twos" together, then "threes". There is a ceremony for each year. At the ceremony for "nines," everyone receives the same birthday gift, a bicycle. This society does not know real death, does not know pain and does not know love. Everyone thinks the same and acts the same. They choose sameness over individuality because there are no risks. No one can get hurt. There are no problems. At the ceremony of "12's," the kids get assigned jobs. Jonas is assigned to be the Receiver, a very honored job, but does not know what the Receiver does. As Jonas trained with the elderly Receiver, he learned that the receiver held all the people's memories of when there was pain, suffering, death and war. The Receiver also held all the memories of real love, true happiness and individuality. As the Receiver, Jonas learned of these emotions, as well as learned the existence of color and music. The Receiver kept all the memories away from the society to protect the people from suffering, but for years the Receiver had been trying to think of someway to allow society to share the memories, so the society could learn real pain and true love and get rid of sameness. Once Jonas started his training, the Receiver became the Giver and Jonas became the Receiver. Together they came up with a plan for Jonas to run away to the true world which existed outside the boundaries of the community and as he ran the memories would be released into the community and sameness would be lost forever. What is so interesting is that this story could take place in the past, present or future. Perhaps our society evolved from Jonas' society, from sameness to individuality. On the other hand, Jonas' society could exist in the present, existing as we speak. Or this society could take place in the future and we are the people from which the society of sameness evolved into individuality. I recommend this book to teens and adults. Both age groups can relate to the story and reflect deeply about life, the way we choose to live and the experiences, both good and bad, that we share. This book makes you think about what a society without pain, color, suffering, love or joy would be like would be like. Would you rather choose sameness with no risks, or a world where you can be yourself, take chances, a life with risk where people are hurt and hated, but where there is color, happiness, music and true love? You decide!

Rating: Summary: Good book and kept you interested Review: This book was great! It really kept you interested. We never got bored. The ending though, was kinda confusing. It didn't tell you what happened after he went down the hill. Did he die or did he live? Did he find the Elsewhere he was looking for? The ending was to undiscribed. The rest of the book was great however! Mrs. Lowry, thank you for writing this book. You made us think!
