Rating: Summary: This book was great! Review: I think when I found out abuot release I was going to cry. It wasn't right to do that to children. I think Jonas made a right decision on take Gabe and leave the community. Some of the rules were unfair. I would like to pick who to marry and what job I want. Also making one person like the giver deal with all their pain is rude. I think this books shows you that sameness isn't always good. They couldn' even see in color because people according to the community would be jelious.
Rating: Summary: A wonderful book deserving of its award! Review: I rented the audiocassette to take on an 8 hour car trip. My husband and 11 year old son complained about having to listen to it--but were both saddened when it came to an end and wanted explanations! My 13 year old daughter and I loved it. I was so touched by Jonas strength and compassion for Gabe and I was so impressed by the ending of this story. I like it when the author leaves part of the story for the reader to figure out and think about. It is a sign of a good book if you have to actually go inside yourself for some of the answers.I thought about this book for days and was thorougly impressed with this newberry award winner.
Rating: Summary: The Giver Review: I read this book as a freshman in high school, which was last year. Most of the novels I wind up reading in English class wind up being boring or not to my interest, I thought it was going to be the same when my teacher handed it out to my class, but I was wrong this book kept me reading and reading as no book has before. I would have given it a 10 if not for alot of the parts of the book had me confused and I had to go back and read it over again. Overall I really enjoyed it and recommend it to all Freshmen. Thank You-Ryan Cox
Rating: Summary: An On-the-edge-of-your-seat book! It was excellent!! Review: The Giver is a very different book, but very well laid out. The book has a lot of mysteries to it because they say things that don't make sense to people like us. Like " When I touched he was shocked because we aren't supposed to touch other people in our community.", but you find out why later on in the book. **Hint**Hint** Just because it may not make complete sense in the begining, doesn't mean it won't in the end. It does start to make sense later in the book. For school I have to read 30 min. and I was reading 60 and 90 min. a night instead! I couldn't put it down. I love how the chapters, usually, end in suspence. This is a great book that I HIGHLY recommend!!! :o)
Rating: Summary: This book is great... Review: but very wierd. My class read it together, and decided that it needs a prequel and a sequel.(A book before and after.)I think everone should read it because if we have to big of a population this may start to hapen here. Claire Mitchell Evansville,Indiana
Rating: Summary: Good for its age Review: This book is still one of my favorites. I recently finshed reading Brave New World and I began to make comparisons between the two. I believe that Brave New World had a much better premise and scope of a possible future, even though it was written in 1932, but The Giver is the better book. The Giver is great for the fact that it has so much meaning in just a few pages and just seems more like the kind of utopia I can see in the future. I recommend it for anyone too young to read Brave New World, and to the majority of people who have read BNW.
Rating: Summary: A great read! Review: When writing a book with a setting where there is no poverty no theives and so forth it would probably be very hard to maintain your train of thought, but Lowry did an excelent job and created a wonderful book.
Rating: Summary: I don't usually read but I loved this book!!!! Review: I don't usually care to read and don't have time, but in the seventh grade when I was forced to read this book, I LOVED IT!!!!! I recommended it to everyone I know and will never forget the eye-opening issues that it brought to me that i wouldnt have even cared about before. I read another story excerpt from her today and thought it was so good that i actually looked at the author and immediately remembered the book i had read in seventh grade when i connected the two. I suggest you should read this if you can read. It pleases any type of reader.
Rating: Summary: You'll love it! Review: This book is one of the few that have, at the end, made me go "Hmm, what if?" and stare off into space for a few minutes. When I was in seventh grade we read it, and the teacher tried to tell us what happened at the end. I agree with Lois Lowry's statement that it is up to the readers to decide, so everyone can enjoy the book. Keep up the good work, Lois Lowry!
Rating: Summary: "The Giver" led to great class discussions. Review: We feel that the book "The Giver" was slow at first but started to appeal to our likings after pg. 40. After we got by that page, we felt like we couldn't put the book down for one minute. We just wanted to read more to find out what happened with Jonas and the community. Some of us were disappointed with the ending, but our class had a great debate on whether Jonas and Gabe lived or died. Jared and Peter
