Rating: Summary: Wow! I couldn't put it down. Review: I can't say anything that hasn't already been said in the other 500 or so reviews, but you really should read this book. But the ending is a bit confusing to some people so READ SLOWLY and THINK about it. (If that's not too hard for you.) I finished this book in the evening when the electricity was out in the house, so even with the very dim light outside I had to stay out there, leaning against the balcony railing, and finish it. My mom kept telling me to come inside, you'll ruin your eyes, but I could NOT put it down. I'd just like to comment on another review, which said this book was like a cross between "Pleasantville" and "The Truman Show"....what?? Okay, it's a bit similar in ways, but it didn't really remind me of those movies. What I'm trying to say is: those movies are not really very similar to the book but if you like that sort of thing (I do), read The Giver anyway. Also highly recommended: Number the Stars (for ages 11-14) and The Golden Compass (for ages 13-113).
Rating: Summary: Enjoying and Suspenseful Review: A real interesting and suspensful ride into your imagination. A real enjoyable book for pre-teens and teens. A well wrighten book. It sure deserves the John*Newberry*Medal. The bigging is a little on the boring side, but it starts to get better and better during the book. Once u get a hold of the book u won't wan't to put it down for anything. that's why I give it 5 stars. It's what it deserves. 5 stars for the great story called The Giver.
Rating: Summary: The is absolutley the best book ever written!! Review: I love the way Lois Lowry describes everything so carefully. Her ideas were wonderfully displayed! Recommended for anyone with an imagination and an open mind.
Rating: Summary: Incredible! A must read. Review: I work with an LD student in a middle school who had to read this book. It was slow to hook, but when it does, boy it grabs you. I couldn't stop thinking about it. This book really makes you think. I recommend this book highly!
Rating: Summary: A great book for teens Review: Being a teen myslef I think that this book would be great for every kid my age. What kept me turning the pages is the little bits of information about this world Jonas lives is, and how it differs from the life we live today. Every chapter would reveal something new, that would be intresting and different from how we go about life. Then, when Jonas started his journey to "Elsewhere" with his favorite newchild, life changed for him. They then knew real pain and it took everything they had, including the memories Jonas had got from The Giver to stay alive. He hopes, but never finds out if his leaving will make the memories of true life go to everyone he knew. Then, you get a very unexpected ending which almose lets you think of what happens to him. This is a very fine novel, great for any teen who would want to read it.
Rating: Summary: This book is well written and has an amazing plot to it. Review: I thought this book was very well written and very interesting. I like the idea that the author used the future for the setting. I thought is was a little confusing at some parts because the author doesnt tell you out-right that the story is set in the future so you dont know why this environment is the way it is. For instance, when the plane flys above and everyone is amazed/frightened, you dont understand why they would be afraid of a plane. The ending has a alot of strength to it and leaves the reader asking themselves "Did Jonas die or did he really find that 'home'?" The Giver is an amazing character in this book. You feel sorry for all the others in the community because they dont know what its like to love someone or enjoy holidays like The Giver and Jonas do. The Giver is the 'heart' of the community, in my perspective.
Rating: Summary: It was a good book except for the ending Review: This book was extremely well written. It has a very intersting plot. They plot was a cross between The Truman Show, and Pleasentville if you saw those movies. The ending was really weird, it really made no sense but it left you thinking about it. Which I like in book.
Rating: Summary: The book was very slow in the beggining. Review: The Giver was very boring and slow in the beggining. It was also confusing. The book got better in the training of the reciever. I do not know why they can't see color. I rated the book a because I did not get the meaning of it. It is confusing because Jonas starts to see color and hearing music and everyone else can't.
Rating: Summary: The best of Lowry's work. Review: What a creative tale of science fiction. The strange world in itself is a wonderful part of the book. My favorite book of all time!
Rating: Summary: This book is really cool, so confusing at the beginning! Review: I really enjoyed reading this book, even though it was assigned from my reading teacher. It's so confusing at first, especially when the apple changes color but Jonah can't describe it. The Giver knew what it was, but I can't imagine not knowing what color was like or what not having a real family would be. I don't know how Lois Lowry came up with this idea for a book, but it was a really good one. The book is so interesting, and it just draws you in. I literally couldn't put it down! I hope the author writes some more like it. The ending is very weird, and it leaces you hanging. That is the one thing I did not like about this book. Anything could have happened at the end, and I think the author made sure that you would think that because she included some pretty bizarre stuff during the story itself.
