Rating: Summary: The book was very interesting. Review: Lois Lowry`s book "The Giver" is very interesting. It is about a world in the future where love, pain and feelings do not exist. At the Ceremony of Twelve Jonas ,a twelve years old boy, is chosen to be the new "Receiver of Memories".After this day he gets the point that life is not so perfect like he has thought before. The book is written in 23chapters.In my opinion the first eight chapters are a little bit boring. But after the Ceremony of Twelve in chapter eight the storie changes. It is very fascinating because you gets an interesting insight into the future.I can only recommend this book, because it is very interesting how other people think about the future. In this book the future is discribed realistically.
Rating: Summary: The Giver-all about! Review: Lois Lowry's "The Giver" is about a world without emotions and truth and about Jonas, a twelve-year-old boy who lives inside this world. He is chosen to be the "Receiver of Memory" and works together with "The Giver" to reveal the truth about their existence. Lois Lowry's style is not too difficult to read and the links are easy to understand. However, she knows how to present a book, in which she wants to make people think about themselves and the world around them but is never getting boring. By writing the book in that way she creates a wide readership and does not stay on a small group where the age chooses the reader. The book deals with an interesting idea of moral and ethic and tries, from my point-of-view, to stimulatepeople to think again and not only live their lives but also look to the left and the right and the rest of the world and the rest of each ones own world. When everyone knows what happens around, things cannot change without the choice of the people. In fact, the first parts of the book are far too unexciting and unsurprising but around the 12th chapter, the book becomes more and more a psychological one with deeper meanings. For myself, it is a book which is a must-read but more than something to beat a bored evening. The Miracle
Rating: Summary: The problem of creating a painless world Review: Lois Lowry's novel "The Giver" deals with the prolems which a perfect world -one without pain, hunger or diseases- might cause. I think that this is the most provoking book I have ever read. With echoes of "Brave New World", Lowry examines the idea that people might freely choose to give up their humanity in order to create a more stable society. The story is skillfully written and the theme of balancing the values of freedom and security is convincingly presented. Lois Lowry steps beyond the limits of the life we know and develops new concepts never thought of before. Skillfully she brings the latter into the reader's mind.
Rating: Summary: A book for everyone Review: Lois Lowry's novel "The Giver" was written in 1994. Being a great book, "The Giver" won the prestigious Newbery Medal "for the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children". It is about a future-world in which feelings and emotions have been abolished. Only the "Receiver of Memory" has them. Jonas, a twelve year old boy, is to become the next Receiver. During his training he finds out about the dark secrets that underlie the apparent harmony of his world. The novel is devided into 23 chapters. The language used by the author is often very easy to understand and not to formal. All in all it is a book for everyone.
Rating: Summary: Brings you into life of the characters like no other book! Review: Everyday we make different choices. What we wear, what we eat and how we act are just some of them. However, in The Giver that;s not the case. Jonas, a young adolescent, lives in a community where all his choices are made for him by a group of elders. In this community everyone is classified by age. When a child is twelve years old, they are given and assignment that is their job for life. Instead of an assignment, Jonas is given a rare honor that leads him to realize how different his community is and what is outside of it. Because the story is told from different points of view, it is a unique reading experience. During the first half the story is told from first person point of view. Jonas is explaining how he feels. Later on in the book an omniscient narrator is interpreting every event. Lois Lowry writes the book in a way thatmakes you feel present throughout the book, witnessing every event. It is not extremely descriptive, nor is the reader unable to get the feeling of the book. I am glad I took the time to read The Giver. I liked the nook because not only do I like Lois Lowry amd her writings, but my peers have recommended the book several times and I still hadn't read it. I wouls reccomend the book because what Lois Lowry accomplishes is showing everyone why it's beneficial that everyone's unique and what our lives would be like if we were all the same.
Rating: Summary: A book for the mind. Review: I read this book when I was in 7th grade and loved it! It's only my 2nd favorite, after "The Outsiders" by S. E. Hinton. Out of my whole class I was the only one who enjoyed it, the only one who understood it, and the only one who carried the meaning with them. It is most definitely a book for the mind. I read it over my Christmas holiday and realized I could hardly put it down, except to eat and sleep! I won't, I can't, tell you any more about the plot because it is something each individual needs to comprehend on their own or else it will mean nothing. I also found that there were parts I reread because it was just so incredible! My favorite aspect of "The Giver" is that the whole plot is set up with subtle little "ties" that will strike you wild when you connect them! I really recommend "The Giver".
Rating: Summary: great interesting fun to read Review: the book the giver is a great book and i have lots of fun reading this book. i find it interesting. to me its like reading how the future is like/ or will be. if i were to rate this book the giver on a scale of 1-5 i'd give it a five.
Rating: Summary: Excellent and creepy at the same time Review: The book is great. It really makes you think about a perfect society. When you first start the book you think about there is no freedom and how you never would want one.then the more you get into the book you think about how the elders spend so much time choosing the your job and how suited it is to you. They have ritual ceremonies and everything is the same and there is no hate or crime and death is all because of natural causes not suicide or murder.
Rating: Summary: A wonderful, magical story! Review: The giver is a fantastic story. It was thinking book aboutwhat if life was like this....,or what if we had to do this. This bookis about finding out disapointments and amazing new feelings. It is a book for adults as well as children. It is a top-of-the-line book and I hope you will read it!
Rating: Summary: Thought Provoking, You will remember it FOREVER! Review: I read this book in the 6th grade for class, I enjoyed it very much. But this year in the 10th grade I felt a need to read it again, and I suppose because I am older, the book has gained an even more cherished place within me for it. This book centers around a society that is totally planned out. Where you receive a position (job) to train for at the age of 12. And you must dress a certain way or you will immediatly get corrected. And an animal such as a hippo is nothing but an imaginary thing. Well that is exactly what a young boy named Jonas lived in for his whole life, and he to thought that his world was the way it had always been. Until he turned 12 and he started training for his position in society, which had been chosen for him. I wouldn't suggest that you find out much more about the plot, because it is 10 times more interesting to read about this book without little hints about what is going to happen. I have read comments about the ending being stupid, but I think that it represents that there is always hope (you will see what I mean when you read it)and that we can't live our lifes in dread of tomarrow, but in anticipation of the new things to learn about and achieve. These are the thought provoking things that this book has made me think about. You will truly experience this adventure along with Jonas, and it will make an impact on the way you look at the world that surrounds us. Every person I know that has read this book, loves it for their own personal reason, so find your reason to love this book, and read it today!
