Rating: Summary: Fascinating Review: Lois Lowry's book "The Giver" is an anti-utopian novel because it takes place in a future without any fear, warfare and hunger but it shows in that way how difficult it is for Jonas and the Giver to live in a perfect world like that. Lois Lowry is a famous author for child-books which are also interesting for adults. I liked "The Giver" very much although the beginning is boring because nothing exiting happens but from chapter to chapter it becomes more interesting and fascinating.
Rating: Summary: A good book Review: In "The Giver" by Lois Lowry, the 12-year- old Jonas is selected to be the Reciever of Memory in a community without colours, feelings and freedom. During the training for his assignment, he realizes that it can not go on like this with the community and he tries to change it. Normally, I would not read such a book, because I don't like science-fiction stories. I read it at school and in my oppinion, the book ist quite good. It makes you realize how life would be without natural things like colours or love. The only thing I did not like much was the end. I think the story ended too fast and I consider the end too vague. But all in all I think the book is absolutely worth reading.
Rating: Summary: My review for "The Giver" Review: I personally don't like such typs of books, but the Giver which I read at school is an exception. The well described world in which Jonas lives is an reason for that. The other reason is the open ending so that everyone can choose his own end. What I don't like is that the inhabitants of the community don't realize what happened with them. In my opinion it is a book that every pupil should have read during his schooltime.
Rating: Summary: The Giver.....a truly exelent experience! Review: The Giver is about a young boy Jonas. He turns 12 and is CHOSEN to be the new reciever.(and no, it's not the kind of reciever in football). Jonas goes through some hard times, but at the end it ends quite happy. i strongly suggest that you read this book. My teacher assinged this to be read in 9 days, but i read it in 1! once you start reading it you'll get sucked into it.
Rating: Summary: The Giver Review: The Giver By: Louis Lowry "The Giver" is a book of the future where all life's decisions are made for you. All of the world problems have been solved and the people live in the dark and are told nothing. Everything is assigned to each person from parents to job occupations. A good example is when Jonas the Main character is talking with is Father and Mother. They are talking to him about how soon he will be given his job assignment for life at age 12. He recalls back to when he was assigned his bike and even when he was assigned his comfort toy. Then his parents tell him how they were excited when they were assigned there jobs, and then they tell him how they felt when they were assigned his sister "Lily". They said they knew it would a girl because that is what they applied for and there application was accepted, and how the Commissioners of the town assigning everything with the help of the "Giver". It would soon be Jonas's turn to be assigned his occupation. I would recommend this book to people who like things of the future. It is a very scary environment where everything is monitored. It is a good book.
Rating: Summary: Great! Review: This book is different..definitely different. I read it the summer before sixth grade, and I loved it! I didn't believe that any of it would be true, so I did not start to not trust parents anymore, as another reviewer assumed a sixth grader would. Really...sixth graders are smarter than that! It is kind of sad, but it was great! It was a tad bit confusing, but as a whole, I loved it, and so did all of my friends! I think it should be read the summer before sixth grade or later.
Rating: Summary: The Giver Review: In the novel, THE GIVER, the author Lois Lowry uses futuristic details to create an excellent story. In the begining, everything in the Sameness community is perfect, there is no fighting there is no pain. But there are also no choices. Every citizen is assigned a job in the community, a spouse, a life and destiny. There are no changes and things always stay the same. Until the day that Jonas, a twelve year old boy is selected as the new Giver."He has been selected."He is faced with the pain and true pleasurable memories that most people in his small controlled community have never felt or could ever imagine, Jonas is also faced with the choice whether to live in a world with no feelings and no choices or to leave the sheltered life he has been used to for so long and pursue a life of love and happiness that the people in his community have never experienced. The choice is his. With the small child, Gabe, who has been living at Jonas' family unit, Jonas makes his decision. He decides that the sweet child deserves a life outside the community. They make a dangerous escape and for days they discover new and exciting things they have never seen before. They have left the comfortable place where meals and supplies were delivered right to their doors, to a place where they are starving and cold. But Jonas keeps going, he knows that there is something waiting for him and Gabe at the end of the road. He would rather die than live without the true feelings of life
Rating: Summary: a book review Review: ok all you guys who look at these reviews: this book is one I truly enjoyed, but that might not be the same case for others. If you like fiction and you have a great imagination, this book should grow on you. It did for me. Jonas's world reflects the world we all want, at least way in the depths of our minds. We all want everyone to be equal, but Lois Lowry shows us what happens (or doesn't happen) because of this sameness. Jonas has friends, parents, teachers, and siblings just like we all do. The book follows Jonas through one of the hardest periods of his life, basically when his real or full and complete life begins. He will make his stand in the world of his people, and grows up by making extremely difficult choices all of us are required to make. Reading this book should be based on what the reader wants, not based on what this or other reviews say. I, like others, just want to make my point known to all of you. Thank you for reading this. Do what you want, don't be pressured or swayed by people other than yourself. Have fun readers!
Rating: Summary: Not appropriate for children Review: My sixth grade son read The Giver as an assignment so I also read it. The book is about a society in which each child's profession is chosen for him. Only one child at a time is trained as The Receiver, the only one who knows emotions. He receives that information from The Giver. The book contains visions of murder and suicide that I do not believe are appropriate for children this age. (It also gave me nightmares.) In particular, I object to a murder that is committed by a respected parent. I think that a child could and would think that parents cannot be trusted after reading this book. I also disagree with the book's depiction of child suicide and murder of the elderly. I think that so many children like the book because their teachers present the book in a positive way. Children expect that they will be assigned to read good books, not lousy books, and the teachers support that expectation. Speaking as a former teacher, I would never have assigned this book to my class. Speaking as a parent, I would never have encouraged my child to read this book. It is sick.
Rating: Summary: A creepy book Review: This book is not for everyone as there are some dark and scary parts. The idea's are original, Jonas is a good main character and the ending is ambiguous which makes the reader think. A very interesting book.
