Rating: Summary: On The Giver Review: Lois Lowry's The Giver is a very interesting book. It contains a culture that is different than any on earth in many ways. The descriptions Lowry employs to bring the different world to us are vivid and do place you right in the community with the people. Reading The Giver gave me a new perspective on the functions of society and how people live in it. If everyone read this book, would they see that every action they make is a statement that proclaims their precious individuality? Lowry's book is valuable as it warns people of something that would be horrific if it happened in our world, that many may consider to truly be an advance of humanity.
Rating: Summary: A Book Everyone Should Read Review: When I first started reading this book, my boyfriend laughed at me. He told me it was something he had read in 6th grade. But I don't think a 6th grader can fully understand the message in this book. It makes you realize how lucky we are to live on this earth, even with all the bad things that happen. Jonas's world was not perfect, even though he believed that it was at first. How can a world without color, love and emotion be perfect? To me, love is the basis of all life. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to read something that will make him or her think.
Rating: Summary: The Perfect World--Or is it? Review: Jonas is a young boy who lives in an utopian/cultic communitty. It is a world with no pain and suffering but also without compassion. It may seem like the perfect world, but it's not. There whole lives are chosen for them by elders: who to marry, what child they will have, what they can be, etc. When Jonas is selected to be The Giver, he is taken to an old man who teaches him the evil in the world, and also the good side. Now Jonas must chose between a world of peace without freedom or a world with choice. I think this is an excellent book because it makes you think about how lucky we are to chose our own destiny. However, as I read this book, I began to think of how people take our freedom for granted. I highly recommend this book to the young and old.
Rating: Summary: My Opinion Of "The Giver" Review: Personally, I didn't really care for "The Giver". Yes, it is a good book, with a good plot, but what spoiled the book for me was the way the characters acted. When I read a book, I like to have more than one character be three-demensional. As I read this book, I grew increasingly fustrated at the behavior of the other characters actions. The only characters that seemed to have any remote form of demension were The Giver and Jonas. In my opinion, if the other characters that were mentioned on a regular basis, perhaps the book would have been more enjoyable to me. However since that was not the case, I cannot find too much that I enjoyed from this book.

Rating: Summary: Mandi's Thoughts: The Giver Review: I had to read this novel for my Pre- AP Lang. class. It was an ok book but sometimes it was boring maybe it's because I like action. Well it's got a nice ending anyway! Hope you will enjoy The Giver. Keep Reading - Mandi :)
Rating: Summary: If you want a book that makes you think . . . Review: This book is often overlooked by adults because of its "young adult" label, which is too bad. I have never met anyone--adult or child--who has not been moved by this book. Lois Lowry is a master of storytelling, and this book is no exception. This is such a departure from her normal style of writing, and it is an absolutely amazing book. The idea of this "perfect" utopia and the restrictions placed upon its members are fodder for unbelievable conversation. I teach this novel to middle school students, and it never fails to amaze me how they respond to this novel. I recommend that this book be read and discussed by people of ALL ages. What a wonderful book for families to read together! (Be sure to check out Lowry's newest book, Gathering Blue, the long-awaited companion to The Giver!)
Rating: Summary: An Unusual World Review: The Giver,in my opinion, was a great book.It made you think,if society keeped us from feeling pain, sorrow,or rage would the world still have certain issues. If you have not read The Giver,it's about a boy named Jonas that lives in a world where every choice wasn't your own, where jobs were assigned and mates were given. Jonas was assigned to be the receiver, the only position you could feel emotions, such as love and hate. He is capable of receiving memories of joyous times and tragic moments. A prisonner is his own town Jonas finally understand there is more to life than past memories, there is color, emotions and people of different worlds. This kind of society had it's advantages as well as it's disadvantages. Seriously I would prefer that small town.
Rating: Summary: One of the Best Books Ever Written Review: The Giver is a fantastic book to read. It had so much meaning and was a very powerful book. I really liked the concept of the book which was a society that was all black and white. In other words you couldn`t see any color. You couldn`t even feel a breeze. You were assigned a job by the elders like birth mother, Assistant Director of Recreation, Doctor, Law and Justice. The boy, Jonas was assigned The Giver. An old man came and would give him a sort of dream, an image. Jonas could see color and feel in these images. He later found out things; secrets that many people in the community didn`t know. When Joans learned these things he was confused with emotions and decided to do something about these things. Another reason I enjoyed this book is because it`s hard to imagine a world perfect, untouchable, and so protected but dosen`t know that life as they know it dosen`t have to be that way. That there is more to life than what they have.
Rating: Summary: Interesting and intriguing plot. Review: I read this book at school. It was interesting indeed. But it is not like science fiction, it has more elements of a fantasy and tale. I think that the main idea is too simple and straight forward.
