Summary: Serial form in Galaxy, August, September, October 1975
Review: I agree with these fanatical endorsements of this work. I recently (yesterday) ran across the second part of the serialisation of Inferno in an old Galaxy, September 1975. I located and have read the first part with much pleasure, but cannot find the third, concluding, part! This yearning is a hellish torture, the likes of which I am certain Pournelle and Niven had in the back of their mind when releasing it in serial form...

Summary: As a true lover of books, this one was at the top of my list
Review: I lost my copy of Inferno to a fire in 1997 and I really miss it. I must have read it 50 times. I would love to be able to find a copy of it. I would recommend it for anyone who is looking for a true book to get lost in.

Summary: If you can find it, by all means, get it!
Review: I've read this book a few times and it never ceases to amaze me that it's out of print. It should be classified as a "modern" classic because its theme is timeless ... Good overcomes Evil (even in hell)! Dante would be proud.

Summary: I am amazed that this book is out of print!
Review: I had not read much Niven before I came across Inferno. I was lucky in a way because I read a hardback copy with no dust cover so I had no preconceptions about the book. (Actually, the UK paperback edition revealed some key elements in the reviewer's quotes on the back cover, so I always had to tell people to read the book before reading the back cover!) Inferno is a comic and chaotic version of hell updated to include man's more modern elements of torture. It is a wonderful book.

Summary: you haven't read until you've read this
Review: When I first saw this book I thought it was a joke. Then I read it. Now I recommend it to my teachers. The way that our hero, Carpenter, tries to deal with the idea that he is in Hell is pretty interesting, especially when one tries to bond with him. Also 'Benito' is a wonderful example that people can change. Makes one think though... Am I going to end up in a bottle out on te prairies of Hell?

Summary: Inferno -- a Great Read
Review: In their Inferno, Niven and Pournelle do a masterful job of updating Dante Alighieri's book.

To appreciate this book fully, the reader should first read Dante's Divine Comedy, or at least its middle section, Inferno.

The authors find many modern equivalents of the Renaissance-era evils cited by Dante. Naturally their punishments are somewhat more modern. Instead of being chased by wild dogs, the modern violent wasters are chased by turbocharged bulldozers. The misers and spendthrifts are natural enemies; Niven and Pournelle leave some of them to Dante's original fate, but they also come up with new ways to pit the Boosters and the Earth First types against each other.

The protagonist and his escort meet Billy the Kid, Jesse James, Boss Tweed, and many other characters. Readers will recognize a certain Twentieth-Century political figure long before the main character does.

The authors make a few mistakes. Phlegethon, the lake of boiling blood, is identified in different parts of the book as Phlegyas and as Acheron. (Wrong on both counts!) They have the gate in the walls of Dis being torn down by Jesus Christ, while Dante specifies that the destroyed gate was the main gate of Hell (the one with "All Hope Abandon..." on it). I hope these errors are fixed before they reprint the book.

But these are minor items. The book makes a fascinating read, and it is very hard to put down. If you ever see this book in a second-hand store, a garage sale, or a swap meet, BUY IT! You won't regret it.

Summary: A great novel for high school students
Review: I am a high school teacher who has taught this book at the Junior level for a number of years. It is always a favorite with students. It is a shame that this is out of print. It is a valuable teaching tool for everything from character development to allusion!!! It is also just a great read!

Summary: Without a doubt, the best SciFi book ever written
Review: I first read and fell in love with this book in the early 80s, and recomended it to everyone. They'd borrow my copy, then steal it, then I'd buy a new one. I went through 17 copies like this, I swear to God. Just got a 5 year return, and I will never let this one out of my sight!
