Summary: A wonderful book
Review: I read this book many years ago, and have been looking for another copy of it for years. I would love to read it again now that I am older. I sincerely hope it is republished. A movie about it would be really nice, then they would have to reprint the book.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: A book to make you think
Review: This is an unusual book: easy to read, with a compelling story line. But it requires you to examine yourself and your actions in life.

Above all it discusses the big moral issues: what is right or wrong, and how these things vary with circumstance and motivation.

Strongly recommended.

Summary: New Millenium, New Hell.
Review: When a classical old world text is used as a template for a modern science fiction novel the heart must sink. A modern rendering of Dante's inferno? Preposterous, impertinent, heretical? No, it is actually a brilliant and very enlightened update of a true classic. The adaptation of the punishments of the past for 'modern' sins (particularly the fate of marketers) is very perceptive, Dante could scarce have imagined the inventiveness of modern sin. I would recommend this book to any classics or literature student to read in conjunction with the original. As an aside, I have lost my original and am furious that the publisher is not currently printing or holding stock. If any reader is in a similar position let's get together and work out which 'circle' to put them in...Seriously, publishers start reprinting and readers, I can heartily recommend this light yet accurate and entertaining read.

Summary: Never before has fiction been so easily mistaken for truth
Review: Imitate a russian officer who's drinking on a ledge and suddenly your in hell!? yes I was captivated from the start.Having giant chained aliens to seeing gangsters frozen in ice, your carnival ride ticket is well worth the ride. One can easily see yourself having to bet the right to cross a bridge by a game of tic tac toe carved on a chest by a twelve foot high demon/devil.Remember,the way out of hell is through the center, but like life finding the center is the real task, because you must go forward. You can never go back

Summary: I saw satan laughing in the night!
Review: Whenever Niven and Pournell team up you know it's gonna be good! And this one doesn't disappoint. By far one of my favorite books of all time. This modernized version of Dante's classic is a literal walk through hell and back. A must for your bookshelf.

Summary: Does DANTE one better!
Review: Those familiar with Dante's Inferno know that it is the narration of a man guided through Purgatory. Dante is witness to all of the terrible punishments designed to purge souls of earthly sins. This modern rework of the story is nothing less than excellent. The modern Dante is a science fiction writer killed at a convention while trying to impress fans. At first he refuses to acknowlege God but finally does and finds himself in the vestibule of Hell. At first he is own his own but winds up with Benito Mussolini as a guide. Even Billy the Kid shows up. Its all the way down to the frozen lake at the center of Hell and a meeting with Satan. Do not miss reading this book!My little review can not possibly do the book justice.

Summary: carpe diem!
Review: This is the only book I've read from Niven, and I liked it very much. It gave me several things: 1. I want to read some books by Niven 2. I want to read the original La Divina Comedia by Dante.

The book is well-written, easy to read and has some really cool imagery. Moreover, you get a a real new vision of 'Hell', a thing I never have given much thought.

Summary: Inferno is a must read for any Niven/Pournelle fan.
Review: Inferno is a master work by two of today's leading science fiction authors. The story is straight forward, the characters are well defined, the theology is consistant and the format is quick. Niven and Pournelle describe the impossible in terms that make you believe in the fantasy universe they are creating. The word pictures are so graphic that you can actually visualize the levels of hell.

Summary: Excellent read.
Review: Ten years ago my roommate in college had Inferno. I like to write science fiction so the book looked interesting to me. I read it twice and tried to find my own copy. I found a copy once at a bookstore in Houston, but I had no means to purchase it. The next time I visited the bookstore I had cash in hand, but the book was gone. I'm still looking for a copy. I have read most of Larry Niven's works, but Inferno is my favorite.

Summary: One to read and re-read
Review: This can only be a repeat of the other reviews. I first read it in the 70's. My copy is falling to pieces, and has been read at least 20 times. I do see a true seeking for God and meaning in this book, very sneakily imposed, but there nevertheless. It is hysterically funny, witty, and inventive. If anybody out there knows how to get a publisher to re-issue a book, let me know! Note to Niven: in some article (was it in N-Space?) you mentioned fine-tuning on this story you would have liked to have done. If this ever becomes a possibility, I'd love to hear more from you, but please DON'T throw out the baby with the bathwater!
