Rating: Summary: spirtual/historical journey Review: Baker writes an engaging tale based on one of the most perplexing events in history, the Childrens' Crudade. This 12th Century debacle is the framework for a masterfully woven tale of redemption through suffering. No sooner does the gentle hand of the Divine lift the fortunes of the tiny band from certain doom than events take a turn for the worse. Starving and exhausted, the children are sustained by the wisdom, both worldly and spiritual, of an aged and disillusioned warrior priest. A Journey of Souls stands alone in the genre of historical fiction as a book portraying life and the process of spiritual regeneration with the artistry of Monet's paintbrush.
Rating: Summary: A Journey of Souls designed for souls on a journey Review: Baker's "A Journey of Souls" brings a hidden warmth to the middle ages. Although not as rich in historical texture as Eco's "The Name of the Rose, for instance, Baker nevertheless brings helpful focus to the mind and heart of the person of the middle ages. Few periods of history are painted with such broad and generally unreliable strokes than that of the middle ages. Baker successfully avoids this problem and brings a rich humanity to his characters. Some may critize Baker for a certain preachiness associated with the character's search for grace. It needs to be remembered by Baker's critics that the middle ages held no sacred-secular dichotomies. Critics only display a public admission of thier lack of acqaintnece with the middles ages with this sort of commentary. The reader needs to understand that the middle ages held a worldview that actually required this sort of thinking. It would never occur to any real person of the middle ages to separate the sacred fromn the secular. Baker dramatically captures this reality without holding the reader hostage to tendentious views of this often misunderstood historical period. If you want real history that unexpectedly becomes a rich journey for your soul then read Baker's "A Journey of Souls."

Rating: Summary: Awesome! Review: C.D. Baker resurrected a bit of history in his reenactment of the medieval Children's Crusade. His fictional account of the many adventures one experiences with the characters is a non-stop march thru tragedy, heroism, and humor. Not for the faint hearted, this journey will leave yousurprised and exhausted.

Rating: Summary: Tremendous! Review: I thought this book was tremendous! I had never read this author before, but got an early release of the book on a recommendation of a friend. And I was not disappointed. I felt transported to the middle ages and quickly involved with the characters at an emotional level. I was drawn into this incredible tragedy in ways I have not before experienced in books. It is not a "fun" book to read in the sense of common entertainment, but was remarkably powerful. It is the first time in a long time that I read a book I truly did not want to end. Although it is about the Children's Crusade, I would not recommend it for young readers because I think it would be too disturbing.
Rating: Summary: A book for those aquainted with suffering. Review: It wasn't just a fascinating story, masterfully spun, but a reading experience that got me more in touch with myself, and will you too, I'd expect, if you've experienced, or are experiencing, emotional pain from living in this world. The worst part of reading the book, is that you immediately want a sequal. You don't want to leave.

Rating: Summary: Liberating! Review: This is a classic and must be read and part of your library. It is such a refreshing book to read. I was lead on an exhilarating journey through several areas of Europe by an amazing troupe of young souls. The author's talents are splashed throughout from the beginning to the very end. This book is liberating for the soul and would make for a wonderful movie for "Souls" of 2000.
