He charts a history of SF's major developments by profiling the contributions of the genre's giants, from Verne and Wells down to the author's own contemporaries (Heinlein, etc.) and also shows some of the challenges to which SF must respond -- namely overpopulation, pollution and the threat of nuclear war. Of particular interest is his outline of consensus future-history, as laid out by Asimov and his followers. A concise and thorough analysis of the genre's past, present, and forseeable future.
