Rating: Summary: I don't understand Review: I don't understand some of the reviews that this book has gotten in relation to Martha Well's other books. Granted that the Death of the Necromancer was incredible ,well, absolutly incredible. But those who say that City of Bones does not come close and that it is a waste of money...well I simply don't understand. City of Bones is a far more beautiful world. When you read it you aren't aware that it is a science fiction book because the world is so real. That's Martha Wells magic. The setting for Death of the Necromancer was also top rate. The only thing that I do believe that it bests City of Bones on is characterization. Elen is awesome but Madeline...shall we say steals the show? I guess what all this is suppose to say is that for those who love D.O.T.N the simple beauty of City of Bones should be so evident. And in its own way takes the reader's imagination out for a spin. I recommend this book above all other Martha Wells books. And then after this I would recommend all other Martha Wells book with the exception of Wheel of the Infinite. Get it from the Library first.
Rating: Summary: A nice world to enter. Review: I first read this book as part of a sci-fi lit class at Texas A&M University. I had to pull through quite a few novels that I didn't particularly enjoy. Left Hand of Darkness comes to mind - shudder. I didn't enjoy it as much the first time as I did the second time around. Mostly because our class was fortunate to have a professor acquainted with Ms.Wells. She visited with us, talked about publishing, future story ideas, and answered a lot of my questions about the story that hung me up. The second time around was a lot more impressive, and since I knew what to expect let my imagine really soar. I highly reccomend this book for a good change of pace.
Rating: Summary: fantastic Review: i loved this book , it kept me turning page after page i couldnt put it down, the characters are lively and animated , i highly recamend it to everyone.
Rating: Summary: Archaeological mystery Review: I usually can't read fantasy, because I can't suspend my disbelief enough to accept what I'm being told. Elves, magic, dragons, all that's fine; what I can't believe are the ridiculous societies and implausible politics that too many fantasy authors fall back on.I loved City of Bones because it presented me with a society that worked coherently, drew sensible conclusions from the information presented to the reader, and provided an archaeological mystery which the reader can try to solve right along with the characters (which is a HUGE plus in ANY novel, as Ellery Queen readers can attest). Perhaps I overintellectualize, but the point remains that I'm definitely going to look for Wells' other books now. That's the only recommendation that really matters in the end.
Rating: Summary: Great prep for pathology questions on the USMLE step 1 exam. Review: I'm a third year medical student and I loved the format of this review book. On my USMLE Step 1 score breakdown, pathology was my best subject. This was the only review book that I used for that subject.
Rating: Summary: A must read Review: Khat is an amazingly engaging protagonist, well worth reading the book for on his own. Taken as a whole with overall good characterization, a well-fashioned plot, and a detailed post-apocalypse backdrop, the book is a must for fantasy fans. Did I mention Khat was a marvel?
Rating: Summary: Wonderful variation of a fantasy adventure Review: Martha Wells does a wonderful job of shifting the typical/boring setting of fantasy novels to a massive isolated city of harsh social distinctions, and a history that is largely unknown due to a holocaust on this as yet unexplored world. Wonderful characters. Wells even graced my sci-fi lit class here at Texas A&M. She's quite impressive as an artist. I can't wait for the sequel to this novel and a chance to see more of this world that's hinted at but never explored. :) :)
Rating: Summary: Another winner from Ms. Wells Review: Martha Wells has done it again. CITY OF BONES is very reminiscent of vintage Leigh Brackett--the hard-boiled hero, plucky heroine, exotic locale, menace lurking around every corner--but with her own unique flavor. Like her great first novel, ELEMENT OF FIRE, this is hard to put down.
Rating: Summary: If you've not read it, give it a try. Well worth it! Review: Martha Wells is a great writer because she has the talent for great dialogue and world building (or I should say city building). In "Death of the Necromancer" she gives her Vienne a real mood, as if you are walking along a dark Victorian street. And in "Wheel of the Infinite" she gives Duvalpore an Oriental and Medieval feel. With this book, she makes Charisat feel like a Medieval Sultanate. The more I read her works, the more I am impressed. I must add that getting into her stories are a lot of fun because they leave you guessing where it's going next. She is definitely a fantasy author worth checking into.
