Summary: Disappointing, thinly-veiled Catholic-bashing
Review: What a waste of a great idea! A half-hour into this contrived, woodenly-written drek, I was wishing that the author had simply executed on what is still a really intriguing concept: A turn-of-the-millenium thriller. Instead, I found myself wading through unimaginative dialogue, characters that by comparison make the Rugrats seem emotionally involving, and cheap shots at every organized religion.

Put this concept in the skilled hands of an author who hasn't got a vendetta against Catholics-- or at least can hide it more creatively-- and they'll be lining up at Amazon.com's website.

Summary: Religious Ignorance Run Amuck
Review: The premise might yield a good and compelling story in the hands of an author who actually knew something about Jewish Messianism at the beginning of the common era and something about both the history of Catholicism and contemporary Judism.

As it is the story is a really good example of anti-Christianity, anti-Judism and anti-history all garbed in a simplistic mellenniumism dished up as literature.

The author would done well to have taken a course or two in historical criticism, or if he did it's a sad commentary on his teachers.

This assumes that he is interested in something other than the power of money which he portrays as one of the pivotal motives of the religous "bad guys" he caricaturises in this work.

Summary: Outrageously entertaining!
Review: I was told this is the hot book of the moment, and I wasn't steered wrong. Nail-biting, heart-pounding, mind-numbing all the way through to the very last word. Not one page that didn't keep me on the edge of my seat and up well past my bedtime to finish it all in one setting (the first time that's ever happened!). Can't give this any higher praise. Will there be a sequel?

Summary: Sensational--brilliant!
Review: I can't say enough about this one. Mind boggling, intelligent, exciting, nerve-racking, funny, sad, satirical, inspiring, and ultimately, very satisfying. The plot is fascinating and extremely well developed. At the close of 1999, on Christmas, a fiery destruction rains down on a secret Israeli experimental station. The lone survivor is, a beautiful, mysterious young woman "born in fire" who speaks in prophecies, parables and proverbs. Seemingly, she fulfills many Old Testiment prredictions. Reporter Jon Feldman covers her emergence and slowly finds himself becoming involved in her bizarre story and in the surrealities of her existence in Kleier's riveting novel. Packed with powerful characters, twists and turns of plot, and plenty of surprises. Highly recommended: an exceptional thriller that will leave you stunned and wanting more, more, more. When's the next book?

Summary: Hauntingly poignant
Review: This started off an extraordinarily well written suspense thriller and ended up being one of the most interesting and thought provoking stories I've ever read. Not only is this book a real page-turner that's impossible to put down, but it also makes you THINK. It's not often that a novel can entertain AND intellectually stimulate, but this book is one of those rare special events that accomplishes both, brilliantly. I won't give away the unusual message and exceptionally satisfying ending, but I guarantee, you won't be able to get this story out of your mind. I expect it will offend many of the devoutly religious, because it directly questions the foundations of the organized religions in our world. So if you're easily angered by people who hold different religious views, you'll likely hate this book. I'm not a particularly religious person, but this often-irreverent novel forced me to look at my beliefs (or lack of them) from a different perspective, and that's a magical quality to find in a story. I can't say enough about THE LAST DAY. Of all the books I've reviewed here at Amazon, I place this one on the top of the "must read" list.

Summary: Fascinating premise
Review: The action is non-stop from the time you open the book. I could not put this one down. And with the year 2000 just under 500 days away, the book could not be better timed. What really will happen when that clock strikes 12 and the new millenium begins. Or is it in the year 2001? My only problem is the number of lose ends left at the end of the book. What happens to the new Pope? Does he reign for a short time as Jeza proclaimed? And what purpose does that American family have (the one who lost their son). Also the book briefly touches on the Presidential race but does not really go anywhere with the idea. A lot of the side characters could have been left out of the final draft of this tale.

Summary: Simply stunning!
Review: This book is going to tie the religious stuffed shirts into knots! The story is daring and forceful and sensitive and incredibly witty all at the same time! It takes on self-righteous religious phonies with abandon and raises controversial, contemporary issues most religions will wish this author had never dragged out of their closets. The story is suspenseful and frightening, the characters excrutiatingly real and sympathetic. There is also biting satire and hillarious humor, backed by a serious message that will have you thinking about this one long after you reluctantly finish it. One of the finest reads I've come across in years. But a warning--this is definitely not for people with thin-skinned religious beliefs!

Summary: Couldn't put it down!
Review: Kleier cleverly uses Scripture and history to knit a tale that you begin to believe is true! You'll find yourself dreaming about this book!

Summary: Inspiringly outrageous!
Review: You will either "get" this book or you won't. Highly unconventional, iconoclastic, irreverent yet very spiritual, THE LAST DAY is unlike anything I've ever read before. It takes on some of the most controversial topics of our time, and it does so intelligently and with a fire that few books offer. The story is suspenseful, scary, funny, and very, very thought provoking. No question this novel will offend many readers. It gores more sacred cows than a shishkabob skewers beef on the fourth of July. But it does so very cleverly, with purpose and meaning, and with a message that is as powerful as it is original. A real masterpiece. Mandatory reading for anyone who thinks great novels arent' being written anymore!

Summary: Incredible book!
Review: This book is unquestionably one of the finest readings I have ever enjoyed. The concept and execution blew me away. "The Last Day" has the makings of a modern day classic and is, at the very least, the definitive book on the new millennium. The ending is awesome--in more ways than one. Absolutely outstanding story.
