Rating: Summary: Can you say BORING? Review: This book had not nearly enough drama or excitment in it to keep me interested. I found the charactors to be shallow and poorly constucted. Resnick's attempt to make you like the charactors failed miserably. Altogether a boring and unenjoyable book.
Rating: Summary: Wow! Review: This book was amazing. I couldn't put it down. It's exactly the kind of fantasy novel you can read over and over again. I know, because I have. Laura Resnick creates believable characters that you can really relate to. Five very different people (an unmerciful water sorcerer, a sharp-tongued fire sorceress, a mysterious warrior, a brave peasant, and a strong-willed aristocrat) must come together, fighting years of enmity between the different groups they belong to, in order to secure freedom for their world and fulfill destiny. The world of Sileria is vibrant, the customs of the people are believable, and the plot is quick-paced. It comes to an unbelievable climax, with an ending that will have you searching to get your hands on the sequel as quickly as you possibly can.
Rating: Summary: Great fantasy book! Review: This book was very well thought out, and had many pleasant twists in it. The characters were very well thought out, and not always what you expected them to be. She had wonderful descriptions of his new world "Sileria" and it was not confusing as many new worlds are. I can just see the world, and the rebels in my mind, and picture what they were thinking!I cant wait for her next book!
Rating: Summary: Your above-average fantasy novel Review: This is not a novel to be taken extremely seriously; I found it to be an entertaining read, albeit slightly shallow. The characters, for the most part, are standard, but solidly drawn, and the plot is well constructed, (even if it does borrow heavily from other fantasy novels - but don't they all?) Ms. Resnick certainly has a talent for fast paced and gripping narrative, however some of the passages in this book are quite tedious and long-winded, and she seems to falter in the historical department somewhat. It's still good enough to make me want to read the sequel, though.
Rating: Summary: likeable characters Review: This is one of the best fantasy novels I've read in awhile. The characters are likeable, even when they are being their most selfish and manipulative. Although the narrative is shared among a variety of characters, the story is compelling enough to follow. I'm definitely looking forward to reading more books in the series. My only criticism is the slow development of the Tansen and Mirabar's relationship. I felt that the author should have included the scene in which Tansen takes off to rescue Elelar and Mirabar tags along. Tansen and Mirabar spend quite some time alone with each other, but for some reason the author omitted that scene. If the scene had been included, then Tansen's feelings for Mirabar would have been more convincing. When Tansen decides to leave Elelar with Zimran in order to try to stop Josarian from jumping into the volcano, he comments about how much he misses Mirabar's special talents for making fires, which he said he learned to appreciate while he journeyed with her. It would have been nice to see how that happened.
Rating: Summary: A very worthwhile read, superb effort Review: This is the first 5 stars I have ever given out and this book really deserves it. Not one but a number of characters are very well fleshed out and the plot is very exiciting. This book will truly go down as a classic and rightly so.
Rating: Summary: great first book in series Review: This was a great book. It moved along and didn't dwell. Which I enjoy in a book. Descriptions of characters and places were good. I found myself looking forward for her next book, "In Fire Forged". Only downfall is that the book isnt in print anymore.

Rating: Summary: Wonderful Book! Review: This was an incredible book. I'm a voracious fantasy reader and haven't been able to find anything lately that would satisfy my craving for a great book. Well, this did it! I couldn't put it down, reading on the plane, in class, late into the night even. I absolutely loved this book and I'm waiting very anxiously for the next one!
