Rating: Summary: Bogged down in a medieval bog Review: Granted that the research for life in 16th century England is meticulous and that the personalites of Dougless and Nicholas are quite charming. The rest of the story keeps grinding away at the same material. In the second part of the book, Dougless rehashes the same information about the 20th century as when she first meets Nicholas in her own time. There is also a small decrepency in the beginning of the book. On page 87, Nicholas tells Dougless that he was writing a letter to his mother, just as he was leaving to come forward in time. On page 99 Dougless wonders if he can read and write. I did not find it a particularly satislfying book and just crept through it page by page hoping that along the way it would improve and that the tempo of the story would quicken. For sure it was not a book that I could not put down. I had to consciously think about going back to read it. Perhaps it is because I am not a real fan of time travel books that I did not find it to be a "thrillingly romantic tale."
Rating: Summary: If it could only happen Review: I found that I could not put this book down. It was hard to believe that these two people from different worlds could find love. If you want a complete get-away from the usual romance, this is the one.
Rating: Summary: A Knight in Shining Armor Review: Fantastic!! Jude Deveraux has continued her excellence in her field. She made the past come alive and visible to the reader. A continuation of the Montgomery family is also a nice "twist". I would recommend this and any of her other titles.
Rating: Summary: Jude Deveraux is the Best Review: Any of the books written by this woman will keep you enthralled. I've worn mine out and have had to buy new editions. This story is humorous at turns, dramatic, unbelievably well researched, and above all the purest testimony to what love truly is. It's unique for a time travel romance with Nicholas the errant and wickedly sensual knight tugged into late 1980's England by abandoned tourist Dougless, a naive woman. Investigating how to get him back is full of chuckles and sensuality. When he does go back Dougless gets pulled along and it was hilarious. Needless to say they cannot live in the same time. I'm not normally a crier but this book makes me bawl like a two year old without her nap. And I read it probably twice a year, every year since it came out. This book is sophisticated, smart, funny, sensual, and perhaps the most romantic I've ever read. Why perhaps? Because Deveraux's "Mountain Laurel" is my favorite book of all time, any genre.
Rating: Summary: One of my favorite ALL time romances!! Review: The story: Dougless Montgomery tries to live up to the standards set by her perfect, rich family. But she always seems to fall short, and they end up laughing at her. She is thrilled when her boyfriend (a doctor) tells her he is taking her on a vacation to England. She just knows he is going to propose! Then he tells her he is bringing his bratty daughter, and not only that, but Dougless must pay half the expenses of the trip. So much for romance! In England, after days of fighting with her boyfriend and the brat, she finds herself stranded in a churchyard surrounded by ancient tombs and statues. Physically and emotionally exhausted she falls at the feet of one of the statues. When she looks at it, she sees a 16th century knight. She starts to cry and wishes that somehow she could find her own knight in shining armor. Suddenly she hears a ruckus behind her and standing there is Nicholas, the knight from the statue. As she loses her heart to him, she must also help him get back to his own time. Can their love endure? How can she live without him? This book is absolutely Deveraux's best! It is Snow White and Cinderella all mixed together with a modern twist. You will laugh (Dougless tries to teach medieval ladies how to play Monopoly) and cry (Dougless must help Nicholas return to the 16th century to stop his execution). When I think of this book, I just have to sit back and sigh...it is such a wonderful, touching story. If you don't love this story, check your pulse...you might be dead. That is the only reason not to love this book! JBogue paper-and-lace Specializing in paranormal romance and fiction.
Rating: Summary: The epitome of romance.... Review: I'm pretty stingy with my stars, but this book was everything I had read about in the reviews. I was hesitant to read it at first because I've never been a big fan of the time-travel genre, but with the new, pretty cover (yeah, I know, I know, don't judge a book...) I was inspired to give it a try. Boy am I glad I did! The first part of the book was a romance-reader's dream. Nicholas was the perfect hero (C'mon, what would you expect from a knight in shining armor?). Dougless, granted, was pretty pathetic, but she was a perfect match for Nicholas. There were many funny and tender scenes in the first half of the book, and let me just emphasize again how perfect Nicholas was. In the end of the first half, when he gives up on pursuing his family's honor for Dougless' love... well, it almost made me cry. The second half of the book didn't quite build up to the romance between Nicholas and Dougless as much as I would have liked; rather Nicholas suddenly remembers their 20th century relationship and wham, they're in love again. However, the historical detail was fascinating; I learned several things I never knew. And when Nicholas tells his mother of his love, it was very touching. However, the ending of this book was the best. It was original; romantic, yet heartbreaking. When Dougless learns about how she changed Nicholas' future, I started crying. And the scene on the plane was the perfect ending. I don't know how anyone couldn't have liked the ending. Of course it wasn't like every other romance novel- it was better. Dougless had gained a spine, Nicholas had gained honor, and they both had gained a love that spanned time. I thought it was slightly unfair that Dougless meets a real-life love (the reincarnated Nicholas?), but Nicholas never marries. However, it does make the love story all the more touching. Have some Kleenex handy! This is the first romance novel that has actually made me cry in a long time!
Rating: Summary: Worth reading more than once Review: There are very few books that impress me enough to read them more than once, but this one is an all time favorite. I love Jude Deveraux and in this one she sees the hidden side of a woman's heart. To have that one person that will be there for you throughtout the ages--I believe this is the ultimate balm to the burned out women of the 21st century, expecting themselves to be perfect in all things. Keep this one in your nightstand ladies!
Rating: Summary: It swept me up......... Review: Although Jude Deveraux has always been my favorite romance writer, I usually choose books that are set in past centuries. To have this be set in 2 different centuries was quite a change for me. I was comfortable enough with the book but when Nicholas came into the picture, everything changed, and I was swept away! He brought out Dougless' spirit and she brought out his tenderness. I just fell in love right along with them.
Rating: Summary: What can I say about this book it deserves a 10 Review: What can I say about this book it has been a long time since I read it and it still present in me. A very hard to forget book because it deals with a real love story not like some other books that don't deliver on the romantic part. This book is going to draw you to it and it will be hard to forget you'll find yourself comparing it to other romance books you read. I just have one complaint. Mrs. Deveraux why can't you go to writing like this again?
Rating: Summary: AWSOME!! Review: Great book worth every penny. I couldn't put it down and I let all my friends borrow it so they can read it. You must read this book!! Jude you are awsome.
