Summary: Very Different
Review: I don't normally read this type of fiction but I had read Mary Brown's previous books therefore I was prepared to try and I am so glad I did. It was great to completely escape into fantasy and she does this so well but still manages to keep a touch of realism. Thoroughly recommend it.

Summary: When you're looking for some adventure.......
Review: I don't usually read books on a whole but my brother suggested this one so I thought I might as well try it out.
It was absolutely amazing; i couldn't put it down after. It was refreshing having a stong heroine that I could identify with as the main character. I also paused many times to read over and over certain phrases that stuck out in my mind. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone, even a non reader like myself!

Summary: A great book!
Review: I got lucky with this find! This was the first book of Mary Brown's that I had ever read and it blew me away! I loved it and could not put it down. I went on to immediately read "Master of Many Treasures" and I'm about to read "Dragonne's Eg." Maybe it doesn't have foreshadowing and people think it may be a waste of time, but Mary Brown did an excellent job and I plan on reading more of her books. Summer was a heroine of her own sorts to survive after her mother died. Definitely my type of a heroine!

Summary: Neither Grabbing nor Original
Review: I read this book quickly, and sadly it was to conclude the book rather than the story. The heroine's attitude annoyed me, and I found the animals to be one dimensional plot devices. The exception to this was the Wimperling, who was interesting even if his end was predictable. The author seems to have mistaken mystery and suprise acts as character development, and I didn't believe any of it. I did not see a point to the story, other than one that was contrived--the heroine had to be set up as pathetic and weak early on to justify and lend importance and weight to her situation at the end. As negative as this review has been, I must say that there were many effective and creative touches to the book (though some of them were half-baked). Unfortunately and perhaps unfairly, this book has added to my lack of respect for and annoyance toward female leads in contemporary fantasy books. This may seem trivial, but one can only read "Alice in Wonderland" so many times. This book is fluff and I have no respect for it or what it was trying to convey since I believe the author did it poorly. However, escapism is alive and well if one doesn't expect too much.

Summary: Like a Fairy Tale
Review: I thought this was a very good book. The plot was new and original and the characters were very round!! But, some of the things that went on were a little too corny but, then again... isn't that what a fairy tale is like? I have yet to read the next 2 books in the series but the ending of this book left me wanting to just go out and buy the next 2 books!

Summary: reads like a pastiche if not parody of earlier work
Review: I'm sorry, but this book seemed like little more than a pale imitation of the author's earlier and far superior "The Unlikely Ones." Again we have an "ugly duckling" heroine, again we have a flawed nobleman/knight who learns to respect and appreciate women, AGAIN we have a collection of disparate animals (some of whom don't even contribute to the plot this time). Sudden plot twists are nice, but we need a little FORESHADOWING to make them acceptable; the sudden turn in male leads was disorienting. And, perhaps it was the length, but the examination of medieval society was too simplistic. Ms. Brown is a very good writer, but she fell short here; it is too soon for her to be imitating herself so blatantly.

Summary: Tired of the same old fantasy--here's a change of pace!
Review: Mary Brown does a masterful job in taking simple ordinary people/animals and making them heroes. This book is a must read for fantasy readers who are getting a bit tired of the same ole' knights and damsels fighting the evil monsters story. This is a refreshing story that is a lot of fun to read!
