Summary: First impression, best impression.
Review: As a 15 yr old English literature lover, I stumbled somehow upon this wonderful book, I think attracted to it mainly by its cover. Being an earlier edition, the comical looking cover left me unsure of what to expect. Since I am no lover of naval narrations, the very beginning left me wondering whether to continue, but, boy, I'm so glad I did. I was so thoroughly absorbed by this book, although very short of time, I read it over and over again. Many may argue that it is far-fetched, but I think that, as a first novel, this really is a bold, experimental and raw success, which has worked to great measure. At 17 now, RAS became my favourite author, and I've found the 'Crimson Shadow' series great fun to read, and 'The Dark Elf Trilogy' too, but none grip me like 'Echoes4thMagic'. I was ecstatic to find out there were sequels for the 'Ynis Aielle' series, and hurredly ordered them from the US, over AMAZON, and loving this book like I did, am raring to go with the rest of this. If you want to get started with Salvatore, start with this, it certainly worked for me!

Summary: A submarine crew is transported to a post-apocolypic future
Review: But what future *isn't* post apocolypic these days?

But seriously, this wasn't a bad book. As I understand it, it was actually Salvatore's first written book. (Note, written. The Crystal Shard was his first published novel)

Note that I haven't read this book in about four years, and don't remember it too well.

It is about a submarine crew that is transported, sub and all, to a post world war III time when magic has returned, and much of the world's population has mutated into Goblins and other such happy creatures.

Once at this future, some of the crew splits away from the rest to join with the "dark side" and hijinx ensue.

This wasn't one of my favorite Salvatore books, but I did enjoy it. If nothing else, it's a good one to see where he started.

Incidentally, I understand that this book is being re-released in the near future with a few revisions from the author.

Summary: In two words: IT STANK!
Review: Hey, don't get me wrong, I like most of R.A. Salvatore's books, but this one deserves my ire! The concept of this book is overdrawn and trite. "Oh, the evils of modern technology bring about the ruin of the world. But, don't worry, magic will see us through and we are the good guys! Aren't you ashamed of yourself for using high technology?" Furthermore, many of the characters were either on the moral high horse or so caricatured as evil people I was appalled that Salvatore could right such garbage.

Yes, it was a first book, but PLEEZE.......

Oh well, at least he got better in his arts of story writing! Can't waite to read his next (if not last) book about that Drow ranger!

Summary: A good book, even though not one of his best!
Review: I am not very far into this book, but what I have read is good. I almost always like anything that Salvatore writes. This book just wasn't quite as good as some of his others, but I attribute that to the fact that it was his first written work. Plus, the plotline is a little hard to follow at times. I mean, I know that the men from the UNICORN went forward in time and all, but keeping the history of this new world straight was my problem. I haven't yet gotten to the heart of the story, though, and maybe will change my mind once I do. I do love the character of Del, though, he is just great. He is everything that a Salvatore character always is and we have come to expect from him. Anyway, in closing, this book is worth a read even if it isn't quite as good as he writes now. Give him a break, you have to start from somewhere and will always improve the more you do it.

Summary: I have read the OLD origanl book and wish to know more
Review: I have read the OLD origanl book that is still on me shilf. It was the first of the books that got me hooked on reading his work for even then he made my imagination run free like only Terry brook had done before. If anyone else has both the old and new version i would very much like to know the difference ( mrmcshade@earthlink.net ). Me greatest regreat all these years was not getting the sequal ( The Witches Daughter ) and am very glade to hear the re-release ( all thought update i am guesses ) of this great book. (( also one regreate about web sites. they do not list wish books were link to others in a sereace )). Anyway for someone who like R A Salatore, this is a good book to read, to get a understanding of some of his first works :)

Summary: Worst R. A. book so far
Review: I picked up this book after having read over a dozen of his other books (Demon Wars, Cleric Quintet, Icewind Dale, etc.) and have loved some, but at least liked all of them. This book, though written in the same story telling style, is a empty story with little substance. The witch was the only interesting character in the book. I would most all of his books a second time. I am sorry I read this one at all.

Summary: Good but not as good as later works
Review: I read a lot of books and mostly fatasy. So I eventually read one of his works. I love his books because all of are good appealing to me in one way or another if you want more action, fighting this is not the book to read. He has done better. But if you are just looking for some magical wars entwined with normal warfare then this is the book. It's ..um.. very interesting. A weird combination of spears and magic.
