Rating: Summary: Nitpickers pass on this one Review: Sometimes, it is good just to read something for sheer pleasure, and not to pick it apart. If you find yourself doing this to a book, it just isn't the time to read it. Put it down and walk away. At a later date, try it again, maybe it will be better this time. This book is really good, because it carries the story into the future. It is good to win a battle, but you always wonder what comes next. I am glad to see that Anne has a co-writer for this storyline. God forbid that anything should happen to her, but sometimes life has twists that we don't expect. Waiting for the next book in the series next year.
Rating: Summary: Not up to the rest of the series Review: This book left a lot to be desired after the first 3 in the Freedom Series. I kept on reading in hopes that it would become more interesting but it didn't. There are a couple of plot starts that dribble away and don't go anywhere. I hope there will be a 5th in the series and that it will be more interesting.
Rating: Summary: A mildly interesting book Review: This is one of those books that keeps you reading, but only because you're sure the good part must be coming up next. The characters were never in real danger and the interpersonal conflicts were mostly solved by shipping people off somewhere. The moments with the Masai were interesting, but too brief. I've enjoyed the romance between Zainal and Kris in the last three books, but they seem almost bored in this one. I was really looking forward to this book, hopefully the next one will have the spark back.
Rating: Summary: Great Series!! Review: Though best known for her Dragonriders of Pern series of books, I like Anne's work that is based in a world similar to ours. The Catteni Sequence delivers. What would happen if Earth were invaded? If you enjoyed Independence Day, you'll like this series. I also highly recommend Susan Wright's SLAVE TRADE trilogy (don't be fooled by the provocative title--good for young adults too).
Rating: Summary: Sadly a major disappointment Review: Well, this is a turn of events. I, who so enjoy reading any book by Ms. Mccaffrey is sad to say that this book was a total waste of time to read. A part for the fact that it was written by Ms. Mccaffrey, there isn't much holding me to keep it. i was rather taken aback when Ransom hit the shelves. i had thought that the freedom's series had run it's course. With the liberation of Botany and the subsequent defeat of the Eosi, i had thought that was all that needed to be said. Ransom was a slow read and at times i just wanted to not finish it, but i have learned to at least give a book a chance. the chance given was not enough to permit me to keep this book. With the poor plot line and lack of anything interesting turn of events to keep me reading to the point that i forget all else, i just wish to say that Anne probably should have stopped at Freedom's Challenge. I hope that she will look into expanding more on other series that i love so much.
Rating: Summary: disappointing Review: What happened? Most of Anne McCaffrey's books have been so satisfiying, especially the "Talent" series and the "Freedom" series. Something happened in this one and truthfully, I don't know what happened. The book lacked charater development,or rather the continuance of what had been good character development. There wasn't any sense of continuation of the plot or follow-up of either the relationships or the factual information left open from the last book. I was bored by the book and this both surprised and shocked me, given how much I have loved, treasured and re-read previous books until they desintegrated. This whole book could have been condensed into a chapter or two while continuing the fine work of the previous books in the series. What happened?
Rating: Summary: More research needed Review: When an author uses jargon that has a history, it's use is expected to be consistent with past practice.Specifically, I noted Ms McCaffrey's misuse of military radio procedures which are quickly found on the internet. The phonetic for the letter B has not been "Baker" since WWII. The use of "Sugar" for S was taken from thin air. The correct military phonetic letters would be Bravo and Sierra. In addition "over" and "out" are never to be used together - except maybe in an old Ronald Reagan movie.
Rating: Summary: exciting space opera thriller Review: When Catten's mercenaries who were controlled by their Esoi masters invaded Earth, the people of Terra put up a brave fight but were ultimately defeated. Dissidents by the thousands were dropped on the planet Botony and were expected to colonize that world. That they succeeded was due in large part to Zainal, a highborn Catteni who was accidentally dropped and wanted to stay. It was Zainal's plan that led to the destruction of the Esoi and the liberation of Earth. Now, the once mighty planet must rebuild their shattered world and Zainal, along with his mate, former Denver resident, Kris Bjornsen, intends to see that this happens. He leads an expedition to Earth where they pick up some coffee and dental supplies and then heads off for the trade planet Barevi where stolen Terran goods are rotting away in greedy merchants' warehouses. It has been almost four years since the last Freedom book was published but it was well worth the wait. FREEDOM'S RANSOM reintroduces the audience to some old and beloved characters and shows what has been happening in their lives since they were last scene. There is plenty of action especially daring feats to keep fans of space opera thrillers very happy. Harriet Klausner
