Rating: Summary: Epis saga of magic, mysery and mayhem begins! Review: This is one the most gripping fantasy novels I have ever read.Drake begins this saga with a aging sorceress who after thrown a 1000 years in the future because of a magical upheaval. She is befriended by some young people in a seaside town. They embark on a danger-filled adventure of magic and romance. This novel is has chilling scenes of sorcery, plot twists and plenty of action. I really enjoyed the characters of Garric, Casmal, two young men who find out of their magical destinies. This is novel also boasts more scenes of monsters, demons, and other assorted nasties that you see in most fantasy novels.
Rating: Summary: best read in a long time Review: david drake has outdone himself! not only are his settings vivid, but they are beleivable. his characters are wonderfully fleshed out and easy to relate to. its a real pleasure to read a work full of originality.
Rating: Summary: Had high hopes but they failed to materialize. Review: While I thought that the book had great potential I felt that it did not materialize. While the beginning started off quite good, the book went down from there, it seemed to be a lot of pages with no action, too much skipping around and didn't seem to be going anywhere.
Rating: Summary: I loved it! Review: My family went without meals for the two days I spent reading this book! I loved the intricacies of the various characters' story lines. Can't wait for the next book in the series.
Rating: Summary: A great fantasy novel with military undertones. Review: Drake returns to fantasy and offers a wonderful new and dare I say epic novel. This book opens with a few bangs and keeps on going. This is a wonderful book, I imagine high school students might read it one day as a classic of the genre.
Rating: Summary: I did not enjoying this book. Review: I had just finished "A Crown of Thorns" by Robert Jordan when I picked up this book. How unfortunate they cannot compare. Mr. Drake bounces back and forth between characters too much. I found I was unable to develop any interest in them or what they were doing because suddenly that chapter would end and we would be off to another character. The story line develped way to slow and just didn't pull me in. The characters changed in ways that were not clear. I'm going to go back and read my "Wheel of Time" series again or maybe "LOTR".
Rating: Summary: A promising start to a new epic saga from TOR Review: I was very impressed by LORD OF THE ISLES. It upholds TOR's high standards of epic fantasy. In the tradition of Robert Jordan and Terry Goodkind, Drake's novel is noteworthy for its interesting characters and attention to detail. I look forward to QUEEN OF DEMONS, the second volume of this epic saga. Drake has the makings of a master fantasist, though most readers probably know of him through his superb military fiction. If you're looking for something good to read until the next Wheel of Time novel is published, give LORD OF THE ISLES a try.
Rating: Summary: Has potential Review: I think the characters have great potential in future book, especially Mellie and Cashel, although I would like alot more description on how exactly Cashel does what he does, and WHAT exactly is he doing. Ilna as well. I liked Tenoctris but got a little tired of her complaining about the uneducated wizards who don't know what they're doing, why doesn't she try and teach them or SOMETHING. I also enjoyed how the author didn't write to us as if we were at the level 4th graders, which other fantasy authors seem to be doing.
Rating: Summary: A story with the potential of an epic. Review: While not as rich and engrossing as other fantasy worlds, David Eddings has done an impressive job creating and filling something entirely new. The story does start slowly, and at times I had to force myself to keep turning the pages, but eventually I found myself totally absorbed by the material and characters. Lord of the Isles is a good read. Not great, but eventually worth the time. I'm looking forward to the sequel.
Rating: Summary: Doesn't live up to the TOR legacy! Review: Tor has always delivered what I thought were premier fantasy books. They have a way of discovering new talent, such as Terry Goodkind. I was hoping that David Drake would be another such find, but alas this was not to be. If you like detailed descriptions of rocks and trees and carpentry and metalworking. And if you are interested in knowing what every (and I mean every) part of ancient sailing vessels are named then this is the book for you. However, if what you like in fantasy books is development of characters, the comraderie that comes from a great quest, it ain't here, folks. I swear, at times, I felt like I was reading one random scene after another. There was simply no sense of purpose in this book. And I simply did not care very much for most of the characters. Several were interchangeable. Oh, well...
