Rating: Summary: I sorta liked this book Review: I liked this book a lot. It was the thickest book i have read thus far in my life, and I loved it. I liked the way _the Broken Crown_ isn't at all like the other fantasy novels I've read- those are usually about "heroism" and saving the world or soemthing. Or winning a war. Or killing a bunch of woodland creatures and magic and stuff. i liked it because it was different. Yeah, the usurper stuff is a bit typical, but Michelle West gives it a little twist. i loved her characters, and there were MANY, but she helps you out a bit there by giving you a character list at the beginning of the book. The book is a bit slow and confusing, but the first book of a series always is when you are creating a new world like that. The world is very believeable and still contains magic and other things that aren't typical here. The ending leaves soemthing to be desired- nothing much is resolved- but you can bet I was on here looking up the sequels as soon as I was finished. if you can swallow 7 hundred and sixty odd pages of reading, then I would really suggest you read this.
Rating: Summary: It was okay... Review: I liked this book because I like just about all fantasy books in general. After about a few hundred pages I felt like I would fall alseep at any moment. It is long and slighty boring. It has it's exciting parts though, just like any other book. I going to be reading the second one shortly and I hope that it might be slighty more interesting. I didn't really like the political views and such either. Some of it was intriging though, But most of it was boring. I would recommend this book only to those who are patient in their reading and can stand boringness.
Rating: Summary: Captivating read, when will the sequel be out? Review: I love reading books with lots of adventure and action. Michelle West did a superb job of forming this plot. I could not put this book down... as proof, my poor paperback looks very used. I enjoyed reading about Serra Diora di'Marano and everyone else. I can't wait for the sequel, "The Shining Court" to come out - hopefully soon! If you love fantasy, you must read this book. I plan on reading her "The Sacred Hunt" series to get a broader look at Michelle West's writing. So get yourself a copy and set aside plenty of quality reading time!
Rating: Summary: Pretty good Review: I read this book and the rest of the trilogy and enjoyed them more than I thought I would. Worth reading (anyof them)
Rating: Summary: Excellent contextual promise; fell through like a brick Review: I read West's first SUNSWORD book up to about 40 or 50 pages. It had promise but it was waaaay too much effort to wade through. Very heavy on details and context but poor in pacing and keeping the reader focused and understanding of the world.
Rating: Summary: Good ideas but better editing could have helped alot Review: I really like the story overall that is being played out in this series ( I have read the first two so far) but I feel that the books could have been alot better with a bit more agressive editing. Ms. West's writing style is a bit different at times and there are occasionally those places where something being said seems a bit repetitive. Also, the writing tends to set us up for some nice bits of action or confrontation then when it arrives many of the pertinent details are skipped over. At times it can be a bit hard to follow what with so many characters spread over two multiple different lands and multiple factions within each land. Probably the most annoying character I have encountered is Jewel A' Terafin and all of those closely associated with her, but I won't spoil it for you. In any case, despite the flaws that it has, I will continue to read the series as the story itself is great and breaks away from alot of the typical "fantasy by numbers" ideas.
Rating: Summary: Great once you know who everyone is Review: I was able to wade through all the titles i.e. Tyr, Tor and figure out who everyone was about 1/4 of the way into the book. Despite the fact that the storyline is hard to follow at the beginning it was a very enjoyable read and I was hooked into the story by the end of the book.
Rating: Summary: Hardly for everyone but still enthralling. Review: If the words "political intrigue" within a fantasy setting make you grind your teeth, I would recommend staying far away from this book. Most of it is filled with things such as political intrigue and the machinations of people trying to claw their way up the food chain. Now, then, that warning aside, I must say that this is one of the more enthralling books I've had the fortune to read in a while. Given all the planning, sometimes it seems the plot is only slightly thinner than chilled molasses and it moves at about that speed. However, Michelle West describes everything in beautiful detail and her characters are all so richly developed. It also helps that she has designed very thoroughly the societies in which the characters live. The contrast between the Domain and the Northern Empire is very interesting to see, especially as the narration switches between the two. It helps to put into perspective how well thought-out the cultures are. Overall, this title is a very enjoyable read for anyone who relishes character development and a rich world for the characters to wander in.
